Best WLM Reviews

Visiting family in Richmond and they took us to ZZQ BBQ and it was absolutely amazing. We got there right at open and had to stand in line for about 45 minutes just to get in.
We ordered way too much food but man was it amazing.
The special was the beef cheeks and they were literally melt in your mouth, incredibly tender and delicious.
The brisket was juicy and fall apart, I would say it rivals or beats Mitch’s. Incredibly good on its own for sure.
The chicken was fantastic and brushed with a glaze that was so tasty, the leg and thigh were falling apart it was awesome.
The hot guts sausage link is one of the better sausages I’ve had at any bbq joint it stacks up well, a little bit of heat and great flavor.
The French onion pie. My lord was this incredible. I love onions and this one just blew me away, savory, rich, salty, cheesy and the pie crust added a nice crunch with the onions and broth. Outstanding side.
The cornbread was solid, my wife felt like it was a little dry but I liked it personally.
The jalapeño mac and cheese was an ok side but I’ve had much better Mac personally.
I didn’t get to try the Cole slaw but my wife really liked it a lot.
Lastly was the Texas sheet cake. Again I didn’t get a chance to try it but my wife really enjoyed it as well!
Definitely recommend stopping here if you’re traveling through Richmond but get here early, they sold out of beef cheeks while we were sitting there then sold out of other sides before it even hit 12:30.
Everyone behind the counter was awesome, extremely helpful, and pleasant. From showing us the sizes and options to order, offering tips, and giving samples of the brisket.
Some of the best BBQ I’ve ever had. This statement might not mean a lot on itself, but I’ve lived in Virginia, Central Texas, and near Kansas City and St. Louis.
Point brisket was moist and tender, had a fantastic bark, perfect smoke ring. Beef rib was fantastic and about as good as you’d get at Black’s in Lockhart, TX. Sausage had good snap. Turkey was perfect. Smoked cheese was great. Sides were all A tier.
You can tell they’ve perfected getting that clean smoke for the low and smoke cooks. A bit expensive but worth it.
My favorite spot to eat in Richmond. Everything is done incredibly well. The staff are some of the friendliest in the city, if you have any questions they’re always knowledgeable and happy to help out. It’s service and professionalism you wouldn’t always expect from a casual counter service spot.
The food is incredible, very very well done barbecue, it hard to pin down one specific “style”besides delicious. I always get the fatty brisket, ribs and whatever sausages they have and they never disappoint. If I’m bringing friends or just in a celebratory mood I’ll get the beef rib. I’m a beefy boy but the turkey sandwich is a can’t miss, you gotta try it at some point. The sides always taste delicious, I don’t usually order a large amount in order to have maximum meat space but I love the beet salad and pickles, the perfect palate cleansers between meat bites. My schedule doesn’t line up with when they’re running the weekly specials but it brings tears to my eyes when I see the pastrami or bacon ribs on instagram, beautiful stuff. If you’ve left room for dessert they always have some incredible sweets on hand. I have yet to try a cocktail there but I’m sure they do it well. All around an incredible spot we’re lucky to have In our city!
BBQ by the pound. That can get you in trouble!
This was my first time going there, although many people have recommended ZZQ to me. I went there specifically to try the Beef rib(s). The helpful meat cutter lopped off a single rib which weighed in @ 1.45lbs. In terms of costs, that's $47.52 for one rib. Not complaining, it was a generous hunk of meat. Also ordered a pound of beef brisket and a pound of turkey meat. Wanted to try a pork meat offering but I'll save that for next time.
Had to try a few sides as well so I ended up getting the potato salad, Cole slaw, tomato pie, & collards.
Here's the run down on my meal...
Beef rib(s) were the top dog, worth the hype. Reminded me of tender pot roast with a nice smokey flavor and a classic BBQ spice rub on the bark.
The beef brisket was very good but did not equal the taste and texture of my favorite brisket at Redemption BBQ. The turkey was tender and tasty and a nice lean departure from the heavier beef selections. Would definitely get that again.
I tried all the sauces, but none of those really wowed me. To be fair, the meats are quite tasty and do not require being smothered in sauce.
Side-wise, the collards were excellent if you are a collard greens person. The potato salad is almost like a chunky mashed potato dish with a definite dill flair. The cole slaw was maybe a little too "fancy" and didn't really meet my expectations for combining with a bite of the BBQ meats. Usually that is a symbiotic combination that goes hand in hand. In this case the cole slaw is more of a vinegary red cabbage salad which stands alone on its own. The tomato pie is like a pot pie crust with a cheesy tomato filling. Also very good.
I know that's a lot of info, but there was a lot of food to sort through. Bottom line, it's an expensive place to eat. Not a casual regular lunch spot, unless you are a recent lottery winner. Food quality is excellent, staff is helpful and personable, parking in a small lot is available (Scott's Addition is a nightmare for parking!) It's set up to be more of an outdoor dining experience. There are tables inside but the whole dining room opens up to the outdoor seating area.
Go there at least once to get the food, it's really good.
I can see going to ZZQ on special occasions and after getting a fat paycheck. A lot to like, pounds and pounds actually.
A fantastic Texas style Barbeque place in Richmond.Great atmosphere. Brisket, Bacon Rib, Beef Dino Rib, Spare Ribs, Sausages, Tacos and and several sides. Everything was prepared to perfection. Will definitely return for more delicious food. Opens at 11 am on Sunday, the day we went. Line starts forming outside at about 10:30 am.
Overall Experience, 4.1/5: The location is a bit unusual, but it was quite busy. Parking is mostly on the street, as they have limited spaces. Overall, we'll definitely return if we're ever in Richmond again!
Food/Drink, 4/5: All of the beef dishes were seasoned and cooked excellently. We tried the beef brisket and beef ribs, both of which had a nice smoke ring on the outside. The BBQ sauces complemented the meats perfectly, especially the Thick Sauce, which I highly recommend. The sides were a bit hit or miss. We had the coleslaw, sweet potatoes, and mac & cheese. The coleslaw was our favorite, pairing perfectly with the meats, while the other sides were just okay—we likely wouldn’t order them again.
Pricing, 3.75/5: The price was a bit on the high side, but that’s expected for BBQ. However, the portion sizes were decent for what you pay.
Service, 5/5: It’s similar to most BBQ spots like Mission BBQ, where you order at the counter and then find your own seating. The staff serving the food were very friendly and helpful with any questions we had. Additionally, there were people walking around cleaning up, so the upkeep was excellent.
Aesthetic/Atmosphere, 4.75/5: It’s a standard BBQ spot with a good amount of outdoor seating, making it a solid choice for lunch.
TLDR; Coming from the south, this means something so pay attention please. This is hands down the BEST bbq I’ve ever experienced. I mean it.
Get here before they open. We came on a Saturday and arrived 15 mins early with a line already starting. It’s worth the wait.
What we had -
Pulled Lamb Sandwich w/cilantro sauce and ceviche onions
Beef brisket
Beef cheeks on chiso slaw
Black pepper brat
Slaw
Cornbread
All 15/10. Doesn’t need any sauces to be honest. The smoke is perfect. They really know how to pair flavors here as well, whatever they suggest you put on sandwiches or their specials, just get it all. The atmosphere is also nice. Good music, shared seating and they recommended sharing if you’re open to it! Everyone was very helpful and kind and the cafeteria style serving felt so nostalgic and unique. Definitely swing by if you’re ever in Richmond and hankering for some BBQ.
A foodie friend of ours recommended ZZQ, a must-visit BBQ restaurant in Richmond. We ordered St. Louis ribs, brisket, and shaved prime rib sandwiches to go and were blown away by the tender, flavorful, and perfectly cooked meat. It was so good that we shared a knowing nod of approval. ZZQ is definitely one of the best BBQ restaurants we've ever tried, and we'll definitely make it a stop whenever we're in Richmond in the future.
