York Beach Surf Club

My sister and I had a nice stay here during October. The rooms were cute and spacious with a nice balcony. It is a great location directly across from Long Sands. Our room was clean. It was off-season, so I can see how this hotel could be incredible during the summer (it looked like there was a pool, firepit and outdoor gathering areas). The front desk was kind enough to leave us our key in a convenient location for pick-up when we checked in after hours.

One issue that I did see on other reviews is that doors to the hotel are propped open, which feels unsafe. Although the rooms themselves had locks, we were totally unable to fully close the doors to the hotel (door from the stairwell to the rooms on the second floor).

I do want to flag that we were double charged for a room and did not receive much help getting a refund and eventually had to obtain a refund through our credit card company. The hotel was completely unresponsive when we tried to rectify this issue (no calls back, no emails back). The other people we were staying with also were double charged and had not realized it until we told the about our experience.

I understand the hotel is for sale/up for auction, so that may be the root of the issue, but the double payment will cause us to avoid staying here again.

The floors were dirty. The bed was clean and very comfortable. We had to call twice to get clean towels and have the garbage removed. They never replaced the garbage bags with new ones. We ran out of toilet paper which was not replaced. The view was great. The room was really not set up for two people. There was one bed and one chair, it was hard to be comfortable on your down time unless you were sleeping. The pool was awesome.

The room was as expected - small but affordable and well appointed and a newly updated bathroom. My major problem with the room was that the lights outside the room were so bright and the shade on the window was so transparent that it never got dark in the room and we all had trouble sleeping. The staff we dealt with were friendly and helpful and the location is great.

This place has so much potential but ruined our girls weekend. It is the biggest catfish of a hotel I've ever experienced. Upon arrival we had to wait an hour and 1/2 past check in time, as the room was not ready. Come to find out the accommodations, although updated nicely, were teeny tiny and not as advertised. No one cleaned our room the entire time. We only had two towels for four people. We asked for an extra blanket and were met with "we don't usually do that." When we finally got a blanket it was grey and looked filthy. There is no internet connection and also none of our cellphones got service, so we were completely off the grid from our husbands and children. When we asked about this, we were met with "I don't know" by the staff. The TV's did not work either because streaming could not connect to the internet. The pool ws green and looked filthy. The pool deck was filthy. There is no functioning pool bar, nor is there "7 am yoga" or any of the amenities mentioned on the website. Anytime we asked staff about anything they replied with "I don't know" or "we don't have/do that." We aren't high maintenance guests, but I am so unhappy with the untruths that this place advertises. I have been coming to York my whole life and not being able to be comfortable while there was such a disappointment. Furthermore, the place has so much potential and looks like an abandoned eyesore on the main drag of York Beach. It makes me sad. Please do better or sell and allow someone who is a capable manager to do so.

The entire outside including the pool area smelt like feces. Our water stopped working while we were out. Nobody called us, we returned after a long day at 10pm. The guy at the desk was like, “oh ya we know.” Had to move to another building. The front desk kept knocking on our door in the morning to rush us out. Told me I wouldn’t be charged for a pet fee but was. Called to get my pet fee back was told to call Expedia. At that point I spoke with a manager who refunded half my stay. However the receipt emailed isn’t half of my stay. I visit York all year for over $400 I had better expectations for this place.

Update: I was very happy that when we were able to speak to the manager, he was extremely supportive and happy to help with all the lacking amenities. I am hopeful that next summer they will be able to fix the WiFi, get the cafe up and running and have the bar at the pool opened. I definitely will be checking back in next summer to see if the amenities are back up and would love to return.

First Review: My husband and I found this place last year and it was a blast. We loved it so much we brought both of our families (one of which flew from CA) to enjoy the beautiful New England coast. Sadly none of the amenities were available, no bar at the pool, no cafe, no WiFi, no lounge chairs on the grass, etc. The customer service is severely lacking, and my family was met with rolled eyes and attitude when we had normal requests such as extra towels and blankets. We were still charged full price and there was no communication before arriving that that these amenities were unavailable, and were never told until we asked. It’s extremely disappointing since there are so many other options here and the reason we choose this place was for the amenities.

Location is awesome, that’s about all this place has going for it. I would give it 0 stars if I could because our bungalow was dump. I have driven by this hotel many times when I stayed in York. Looked like a fun place, Decided to book a bungalow. Non of the amenities on the the website exist. The restaurant and outside bar is not operational as they don’t have a liquor license. The 2 bedroom bungalow had no seating or a table, just a ripped 2 person couch/chair and a luggage rack. The website talked of outdoor seating areas, grilling stations, and outdoor showers, and cooking utensils at the bungalows none of which existed. We had no wifi in the bungalows despite boasting of the best wifi on the beach. We were repeatedly told it will be fixed tomorrow. We stayed for 4 days and it was never fixed. This normally wouldn’t bother me except you cannot get cell service anywhere on the property. We had to walk to the beach to get text messages or make phone calls. Swim in the pool at your own risk, it was green and cloudy. This was the beginning of August which I find totally unacceptable and disgusting. The confirmation said check in was 3:00. Got there and the clerk argued with my wife that it’s 4:00. The policies agreement that my wife signed at check in said 3:00. The clerk still argued and our room wasn’t ready until after 4. The staff seem like they don’t care and get defensive when you complain. The website is false advertising Save your money go somewhere else.

My husband (a disabled veteran) and I had made reservations 7/29-8/1/24 at another hotel we found the pool didn't work, the staff(Davian,Adelina,and Serge along with Clark,the owner)went above and beyond to get a room at YORK BEACH SURF CLUB which covered everything we wanted, beachfront and not just one pool, but two for my husband and everyone made sure we were happy and comfortable, they were great. We definitely stay again. Thank you, all of you there.
