Best WLM Reviews
Stopped in for the pizza and thought the pizza was just average.
The crust was fine, crispy and tasty. The tomato sauce was too thick for my taste and did not taste homemade, the cheese was fine and I did like all the basil.
Service was perfect.
You don't come here for the atmosphere. You come for the food. The pizza here is perhaps the best in the OBX. I say "perhaps", because there are a lot of really good pizza places. So no ding on them. We have eaten them and yes, good. Yellow Submarine is excellent. Personal preference. I can't comment on the other menu items, but ordering the pizza and enjoying a beer at the bar while I wait for the pizza is pretty nice.
Visited during shoulder season. Nobody else inside. Counter person was friendly. Had the Spinach and Feta version of the Rip Curls. They were served PIPING hot, with two sauces on the side. VERY cheesy and tasty. Would've given 4 stars if they didn't serve the food (delivered to the table) with so much plastic: plastic utensils; ranch and marinara sauce each in a little plastic container, with plastic lids; single-use plastic cups for water. Certainly they have a dishwasher in the back and can practice a little sustainability.
Stopped by to grab lunch. Gentleman that took our order was very friendly. We had the basket of onion rings, the Chicken Ranch sub and the Italian Grinder. Everything was fresh and the onion rings were the best I’ve ever had. So crunchy. Definitely be back soon.
Service was mediocre. Nothing particularly wrong with it, but staff didn't seem like they really wanted to be there. The atmosphere was pretty dull, and the interior looked very dated.
Food -- what you're probably looking for. The Yellow Submarine was edible, but not fantastic. It lacked flavor, and I've definitely had better hot subs elsewhere. The Pepperoni Rip Curls were easily the highlight of our meal. Tasty, if a bit oily, but overall exactly what I expected and quite enjoyable. The Chicken Parm sub was, by far, the worst of the food we ate on this visit. Essentially it's chicken nuggets on a soggy sub roll, smothered in bland tomato sauce with charred cheese on top. Extraordinarily disappointing all around. Our daughter couldn't eat more than a few bites before she gave up. I tried it and was repulsed by the taste of the chicken and the overall lack of flavor in the tomato sauce. The chicken parm sub either needs to be taken off the menu or completely re-worked and made with better ingredients.
Price. I get that the restaurant is in a high-traffic tourist spot, but even still, the prices seemed excessive for what you get. Tip was forced at payment with a card, which is not cool.
My husband and i both had subs, he had the steak and cheese which he loved. I had ham and cheese which was excellent as well. Loved The Beatles theme. Had to buy one of their cool shirts....we went back again the next night, our last night down there. He wanted another steak and cheese sub. I tried the pizza this time. Got plain cheese. Was average. But def good! Will be back next yr! Cant wait!
Server didn't remember whose drinks belong to who after 2 minutes.
They don't understand simple questions - we ordered drinks but the fountain drink stand is in the lobby. We asked do we refill our own drinks he said you need to order them first.
Our server is from the Ukraine, and others are from Poland and Croatia. This would explain the lack of understanding simple questions.
The place is dark.
The walls are lined with Beatles memorabilia and with the Beatles records.
The cheese fries are scrumptious and come out hot and fresh. A must have!
The Italian grinder wasn't the best, it was flavorless causing me to use ketchup as a flavor. The meat was cold but the sub was cooked. I don't recommend
The cub grinder is the choice if you're into grinders. We requested crispy bacon and it came out perfect.
The rip curls (similar to a calzone but open ended) are okay, we ordered the pepperoni. It comes with 2 sauces, ranch and pizza sauce.
As expected it was greasy but tolerable. Don't order the 12 ripcurls count unless you're starving. You'd need more than dipping sauce
The server didn't provide the amenities you'd expect from a restaurant, napkins, checking on you. We had to ask for refills and each time he asked what we were drinking. Really??
The pizza crust is bland and limp, no seasoning. The sauce tastes like watery pasta sauce.
You'd be happier with the ripcurls
The restaurant appears to be clean. They clean a table almost immediately once patrons leave.
The bathroom is dirty!!! They should be maintaining the bathrooms better. It was awful.
Visit at your own risk
As we pulled into the Outer Bank to start our week long vacation, we stopped for lunch in Nags Head on our way to Kill Devil Hills. Our first couple of stops were only serving breakfast or brunch. We moved on to Yellow Submarine and found our lunch just after 12:30 on a Sunday.
Our table for ten was ready immediately and many of the other tables were also occupied or would soon be filled with hungry patrons. The long bar stayed empty but would make a good spot for a quick dinner if the tables were all full.
My wife and I split the chicken Philly, grilled chicken cooked with white onions, sauteed green peppers, and mushrooms. This is topped with lettuce, tomato, mayo, and white American cheese, served with potato chips (6-inch: $8.49, 12-inch: $13.49). Overall this is a very filling sandwich and the taste was good. There is plenty of cheese on top, which is a requirement for a solid Philly.
The start of the meal were the rip curl appetizer we shared with the table. These are pizza dough brushed with extra virgin olive oil, fresh garlic, Italian seasonings, and stuffed with Mozzarella cheese and pepperoni, sliced into pinwheels then baked (12 count for $17.48). These are awesome and highly recommended! A smaller 6 count is available for a smaller group.
Overall the prices are a little high, but that often comes with tourist destinations. Our service was excellent and the food was good.
