‼️‼️‼️Warning: Think Twice Before Getting a Membership Here‼️‼️‼️
If you’re considering a membership at this gym (XSport Fitness, now managed by LA Fitness), please read this review carefully. When I joined 12 years ago, this place was well-maintained and enjoyable. Unfortunately, over the years, it has deteriorated to become one of the worst gyms in Northern Virginia.
When LA Fitness took over, the front desk staff misled me, claiming the new management would invest heavily in renovations and improvements, promising a transformed gym in just a few months. On their word, I signed up for a two-year membership, only to discover later that LA Fitness has a terrible reputation nationwide.
Under XSport’s management, the gym wasn’t spotless, but at least the equipment was functional. Since LA Fitness took over, the gym has become much worse. Equipment remains broken for months without repair, and this isn’t just at one location, I’ve experienced the same neglect at their Fairfax, Merrifield, and Alexandria branches. The hot tub and pool have been closed indefinitely, and the bathrooms and steam rooms are consistently filthy.
Adding to the frustration, the gym is no longer open 24/7. The current hours are inconvenient and impractical, especially for people who work non-traditional schedules. It’s disappointing to see a place that once had potential fall into such disrepair and mismanagement.
If you value clean facilities, well maintained equipment, and transparency from gym management, I strongly advise against getting a membership here. There are better options in the area that will respect your time and money.
Decent gym. However, it's halfway broken at the moment.
Steam room - not working. Sauna - not working. Jacuzzi - not working. Swimming pool - not working.
I asked the management at least 10 times. Recently, I started hearing annoyance in their voice suggesting I should stop asking "it's gonna take a while".
Mind you that all the above mentioned facilities are out of service for over two months.
Don't get me started about the disgusting showers or broken exercise machines.
On the bright side: they have a decent selection of machines. 4 squat racks. Multiple bench presses. And the membership is fairly affordable. All these gain them the two stars.
If the equipment and facilities get fixed I'd be happy to rate them 4-5 stars.
This gym was purchased by LA Fitness but they have completely stopped maintaining it. Everything is broken and all products have been removed from the store. The place is a mess by any standard and the staff has few answers on when or if they plan to fix stuff. It’s sad. Many treadmills, the pool, sauna weight machines all broken. If you have a membership like I do it’s a bad value. I hope they fix it but until then avoid this gym. Pa the skeleton staff they have there are wonderful, the new owners however don’t seem to care.
They changed their hours but don’t even know how to update on google.
Sauna, steam, showers & pool are always down. Equipment dirty or broken. No more 24/7 hours, no more free gym towels.
The management here is uneducated, inadequate & downright lazy. To be a “physical trainer” here, you just need an online certificate….
Anyways the janitors & maintenance crew seem to be the only hard working employees.
I look forward to your copy & pasted reply && lack of effort.
Loved it when it opened, but that was over a decade ago and nothing's been maintained. It's not just one broken machine one day, it's the constant decay of every machine every day. They've had a banner for months about upgrades that are "coming" but I've given up on actually seeing them. Time to move on.
The gym I was attending was far from my home, so I wanted to cancel my membership. Every time I tried, they told me only the manager could handle cancellations, and they never proceeded with the cancellation. Additionally, seeing one of the trainers vaping inside the facility was very disappointing. I expected a more professional approach. Such poor management is truly unbefitting of a prestigious location like Merryfield.
Gone downhill since LA fitness took over. They also would not let you cancel over the phone or online, even though you can sign up with either of these two methods. This day and age, it’s a big joke. They should provide a service people want to keep paying for, instead of holding members hostage! This just ensures I would never sign up with them ever again.
I really enjoyed the classes at this gym and the prices are competitive compared to other gyms, but it’s more than you should be paying for the constantly overcrowded floor and poor management.
Some of the staff are very kind, but the management is terrible. I have had multiple negative interactions with Brandon, specifically. I am disappointed by the lack of professionalism and the aggressive sales tactics (body shaming, financial pressuring, guilt) I’ve experienced through my interactions here. I have not seen management take accountability for the mistakes they have made regarding negligent handling of my account and the financial consequences I have suffered because of it.
I continued to come to this gym because I enjoyed the Zumba classes offered and had lots of peers who went there as well, but I would not recommend it to anyone who can afford otherwise.
Again, some of the staff are helpful and the class instructors are incredible. Hoping the recent switch to LA Fitness will include some adjustments to management.
