What a dump.. And that’s putting it nicely. Hands down the worst hotel I’ve ever stayed at. I knew before arriving it was a no frills kind of place so I went in with literally no expectations but still was left scratching my head at how the hell the place is still open. My Husband and I surprised our 4 children with a one night stay here after exploring other unique tourist spots in Nevada. The Clown Motel is definitely famous, our kids knew all about it because their favorite YouTubers visited it. But WHY?! The rooms are run down, dirty, and outdated. The caulking job in the bathroom? That’s the only scary thing we saw.. floors were filthy, ants in the bathroom, bathtub needs to be completely gutted (someone is bound to fall right through one day) and I’m pretty sure the walls are painted a dark color for a reason.. Tourist trap. That’s it. Take a tour if you’re intrigued but save your $ and stay somewhere else.
We stayed here for one night and had a lot of fun. The decor is simply stunning. I wonder who painted all these many clowns. Very impressive. We arrived 2 hours early and were allowed to check into the room an hour before the official time, after it had been thoroughly cleaned. A small tip: Choose a room on the upper floor, as on the ground floor, you can hear every step of the neighbor above you!
The Clown Motel was wonderful! The exterior was newly painted and the rooms had been updated and new linens. Owners were so nice and helpful. My only issue would be that the bathrooms need and update and the Clown Museum was wonderful but needed to be cleaned and dusted. Would recommend in Tonapah NV.
So I didn't stay there, we just stopped in to see it and browse the gift shop. We met the owner who is super cool and we got to look at a couple rooms. They were in the middle of cleaning but it all looked super clean and super creepy. I will be staying there if I'm ever back this way.
We lived. All jokes aside, this place is super unique, and everyone was talked to had a story to tell about it. The owner is really friendly and even let us look at the movies they were filming there. This was a bucket list stop for sure!
(I was tired, but around 3am I swore I heard a woman talking quietly in the bathroom, spooky!)
We stopped here on our road trip from Vegas to Reno because I love weird and creepy stuff. We did not stay here, but we did check out the museum and snapped some pics. We also checked out the Tonopah Cemetery and paid our respects to the dead who rest there.
This place is delightfully creepy and rumored to be haunted. Maybe one day I'll gather enough courage to spend the night here (or not).
The most fun stay I’ve ever had in a motel. Had wanted to stay at this place for years and finally got the chance last week, Vijay has done a great job making this place what it is, the rooms are clean (and very reasonably priced) and the gift shop and ghost tour was very fun!
Would 100% stay again!
I've stayed here a few times in the past, but most recently I had poorly planned a trip and arrived in Tonopah without securing a room the weekend of a big race outside town. So, basically every room at every lodging in Tonopah was booked. This was my last hope without knowing where I'd sleep that night. They literally had one room left, which the front desk held for me until I made it down there. I appreciated that and it saved me a lot of stress.
In terms of the motel itself, I understand fully its appeal as a tourist attraction. It's gimmicky, the haunting stories are fun (never had a first-hand experience), it's an interesting historical journey to wander around the adjoining Old Tonopah Cemetery, and the famous museum/gift shop has a unique & fascinating selection of items. But for the price you pay, the quality of the rooms is nothing special. Inside the rooms & outside of the motel, it's tough to disguise the disrepair of the building underneath the garish theme & decor. There's a lot of little things falling apart inside and the outdoor staircase to the second floor is in need of repair. The bed and shower were both disappointing.
Generally, you'll get a better ghost experience at the Mizpah Hotel. I would suggest staying somewhere more affordable or better quality in town, and just walking or driving to check out the motel exterior and visit the gift shop & cemetery.
