What an unexpected jewel to find in San Marcos! The food was very fresh, delicious, and we will be revisiting. I love the fried rice, I ordered it with extra vegetables and it was very fresh and delicious. They even have cheeseburgers for the kids, they were tasty. We had the pan fried dumplings, absolutely delicious. This place actually serves salt and pepper wings which I love! The salt and pepper shrimp was very light fresh lightly battered and delicious. We also had the soup and eggrolls. This is definitely a place you would want to visit if you’re anywhere near, the Austin or San Antonio area or new Braunfels. Absolutely delicious. You will enjoy.
I honestly stopped here because of the name of the store. When I arrived I was seated immediately & my drink order was taken and brought shortly after, being mindful that I stopped here around 3pm on a Thursday so not busy hours. That being said this place didn’t miss. I ordered the Happy Family and it is a must try. The chefs special brown sauce is the best I’ve tasted in years. We also ordered the signature wok & Roll to go. After a 3 hour drive home it was still delicious when shared with my wife who was very grateful! ????
The staff and food were great! Our waitress communicated very well from taking our order to bringing our food out. Peking duck was awesome ! Mongolian beef was the real deal!
Amazing experience with this local treasure. My meal was popping with flavor, and the duck fried rice is legit. Gladly recommend for those in the area.
From the atmosphere to the food- this food just sells Chinese buffet. This, of course, has its ups- fast food, fast service, and hefty portions, but on the downside it has low quality food, taste, and questionable prices. I think Wok N Roll is great for a college town like San Marcos with broke college kids who don’t know quality, but if you’re an out of town foodie- I wouldn’t put this place on my recommendations list.
Now here’s what I got-
The milk tea boba (2.5/5)- questionably gummy boba balls but the tea itself wasn’t half bad, just a little too sweet (~ $6.00)
General tso chicken with fried rice (3/5)-
Extremely saucy chicken with an okay taste- nothing memorable or exciting but the portion was huge! Came with an egg roll (this was the most enjoyable part) and super bland/dry rice (~ $14.00)
Mongolian beef with steamed rice (2.5/5)-
The veggies seemed raw (I’m not sure if they’re supposed to be cooked or not, but just don’t expect them grilled or anything) but the crunch to them actually made the dish 5x more enjoyable. The meat was saucy (just like the chicken dish), but super chewy- my brother said it was “fake meat” (like the cafeteria stuff). Again, this dish came with a heaping amount of food, an egg roll, and some steamed rice (considerably better than the fried rice because the fried rice just seemed so bland and dry, and although the steamed rice wasn’t much better you just can’t blame it because how else are you gonna make steamed rice?) (~ $14.00)
The Shaggy Dog Roll (1/5)-
I’ve tried a number of sushi in my life from many different (questionable) places, but this has to be the worst sushi I’ve ever had. It wasn’t bad because it was ridiculously gross or anything, but it just lacked flavor and structure- I was honest shocked because I have never had “bad” sushi before. Even if I did come back to this place (for some reason), this is a menu option I would NOT recommend- even if they did lower the price (~ $14.00)
Service-
Extremely fast and good service. We didn’t have to wait for a table and our server was very attentive. The food came out ridiculously fast too, kind of like it was just sitting back there waiting for us and all they had to do was pop it in the microwave for 2 minutes then bring it out (which I wouldn’t be surprised if this was actually the case), but something about the speed of the “making of the food” was extremely nice- because who doesn’t want to go to a restaurant and just immediately get what they ordered.
Conclusion-
Overall, if you’re feeling explorative and just want to try what San Marcos has to offer then you should try this place, you might find a better menu option for you than I did, but I can promise that no matter what you won’t leave feeling that sense of happiness and satisfaction you get from quality, good food- you won’t be grossed out or anything either, you just might leave feeling a little empty or like something is missing. However, if you want extremely… like ridiculously fast it’s questionable service then you’ll love it here.
I live over 50 miles away, and generally love to purchase food from here. I did not check my $55 order today, and had burned wontons, crab rangoon, and egg rolls with my order. I called to discuss this, and the manager was not there supposedly, and the guy on the phone offered 2 free eggrolls, and an order of crab Rangoon. That meant that my soup had no good wontons, and I needed to drive back 50 miles to replace 4 egg rolls with 2, and an order of Rangoons...Happy to see how this restaurant handles mistakes, and there will be no future catering, nor family orders for me. It doesn't matter how good a restaurant is, I have a choice where and how to spend my funds, and I'm done here.
I was really looking forward to having orange chicken, i was so disappointed. It was almost burnt and had no flavor. My rice was cold and I had picked it up right on time(ate in my car) Kung pao and lo mein were pretty bland as well. Not sure if it’s because it was almost closing time, that should not matter because I paid almost $50 for small portions and bland food, I’ve had better for less. will not be going back.
Great atmosphere! Food was delicious. Came to the outlets and looked up places and this was recommended to us. Plates to try:
#1- Walnut Shrimp
#2- Peking Duck
#3- General Tso’s
All were so delicious. We also had the beef flat noodles, Cali sushi roll, and pork dumplings which were so good! Our server, Newsha was amazing! Will definitely come back!
