Best WLM Reviews

You must go here! My husband & I are touring North Carolina for the month of September and this was a top highlight for us Our first barbeque meal was our best! Friendly quick service by the efficient waitress (Heather). I had never tasted hush puppies before ..how delicious they are! We had a scrumptious half plate with a side each and tried skins which were crispy and yum!
The best part was a personal tour by the owner who explained how everything was made. Thank you Willis, you are a warm hearted, generous man who clearly is passionate about keeping this business a success. May it be blessed and prosper in the years ahead. Should we ever pass by again we most definitely will be visiting!
Beware. They claim #1 but I think they forgot a few zeros. Very disappointing. What we ordered & what we got were 2 very different things. You can only order online. We received web confirmation & email confirmation. Even the receipts showed what we ordered. But we received way less. Showed slaw was included - it was not. Showed gravy was included - it was not. Showed 1 to 2 sides - we both ordered 2 but only got one and barely one (ordered fries & we got about 10 pieces, BBQ potatoes = about 3 pieces & one was hardly cooked). And the pork was not very good - very spicy, no slaw, no sauce. Soda was mostly ice & flat. $22 not including tip. Yikes. We won’t be back.
Great food and atmosphere! Waitress was nice and very attentive. Food was great; expect a little hotness with the meat! They also have their own sauce you can add on top. Desserts are made in house and are amazing. Veggies are from local farmers as well! Overall great experience.
Outstanding barbecue, Brunswick stew, hushpuppies and pretty good okra! I was a stranger but i got a warm wecome and a large glass of sweet tea.
Then the plate of cue arrived and it was looking and smelling great. The pork was medium chop, slightly smokey and very well prepared. Both the hushpuppies and the Brunswick stew are addictive!
I will go back next time I am in the area!
My husband and I got the pork BBQ, Brunswick stew, slaw, Wilber's cookies, and sauce from their Raleigh pop-up, so we can't rate the atmosphere of the restaurant, but everything else was incredible. The BBQ had clear smoke flavor from cooking and just a hint of spice - it didn't last long in the house! - and we really appreciated the size of the chop (medium, some good chunks in the pint). Wow, the sauce. We've been putting it on everything we can since we got it. It has just the right amount of bite. The pork with some sauce plus some slaw on the side is the perfect balance of smoke, spice, bite, and sweetness.
But, seriously, don't sleep on the cookies. Neither of us are typically fans of cookies with dried fruit in them, but these are the exception. The edges are crunchy, the middle is chewy, and they're toasty, sweet from the fruit, and nutty from the pecans. Absolutely addictive.
It was all made so much better by the warm service. We'll be swinging by the restaurant soon and they can count us as to-be regulars.
If you want a classic look without the fake modern renovations and great fresh chicken and BBQ then check it out. The service from the waitress to the hostess was on par with Chick filet. The hostess was told by our waiter it was our first time at wilbers. The hostess came back over after we ordered and offered a tour of the "pit" where the magic happens. The extra mile was really nice. The water was the best restaurant water I have ever had. If course with pellet ice! I am sure that clean water makes great sweet tea.
I enjoyed my first meal at Wilber’s BBQ with my Dad in 1963 and enjoyed hundreds more as I passed going to/coming from beach. I paid and walked away from today’s partially eaten “last” meal at Wilber’s BBQ today. BBQ didn’t even have a hint of open hearth cooked smoke but by design or error it was grossly over salted and served barely room temperature. I told the waitress I couldn’t tolerate that much salt, she noted that other customers had complained about the salt and left to speak to kitchen and came back after a short wait with a smaller portion of BBQ that had less salt and was cool, as in just out of refrigerator. I ate around and left the golf ball size lump of un-chopped grizzle, or something I couldn’t identify, and when I pointed it out her response was a simple “sorry”! I paid cash, as I often do, and after watching the young woman struggle finally told her how make proper change for the money handed her. We left and stopped at another local BBQ place and bought a lb of tasty pit-cooked BBQ to cover the lingering unpalatable taste! Restrooms were nicer and ties to local history, universities, Air Force, etc. all removed. Also must note no refills for tea or hush puppies offered. Enough, cold food, uncaring staff and changes that didn’t improve image or quality! I will truly miss the warm, comfortable place I used to stop for a warm and tasty meal! Aim High(er)! ????
I grew up eating here when Wilbur Shirley owned it in the 70’s and 80’s. Haven’t been in forever b/c I now live in FL. My brother had them ship 4 pints of BBQ and sauce for my birthday and it was EXACTLY like I remembered!!! Moist, just spicy enough, not fatty or greasy. Arrived still frozen and perfect. Definitely recommend!!! And THANK YOU to the local boys who took a risk and kept a beautiful tradition alive ????????????????
