Best WLM Reviews
Oldest running tavern in the US with fine dining options. We absolutely loved the history and ambiance of the place. The restaurant is multi story which I’m assuming has to do with being in the NE, but we had a private room to ourselves. We got the duck scotch egg, grand sampler, and beef Wellington. All were so good. We’ve even tried the beef Wellington at Gordon Ramsays restaurants and I’ll say this was even better!! The waitress was so kind and attentive even bringing out an extra plate to our nephew who came with us.
I love this place, it never disappoints!! This was my third visit and was happy to be in a third room to enjoy the ambience. The food is amazing. I had yet again the Beef Wellington which is to die for and absolutely loved the lobster bisque. My husband had the scotch egg and the beef Wellington and he loved them as equally as I loved mine. This place is a must-visit and the drinks are awesome as well as the service!!
Favorite restaurant in Newport. The history alone makes it awesome but the food cements it. Went for my birthday dinner and was blown away. Started with the heirloom tomatoes & burrata and the dish was simple and amazing. To follow up we did the bacon wrapped scallops and the tuna tartare and both were exceptional. For my main I did the beef wellington and it was absolutely perfect in every way. Finished off with the orange vanilla creme brulee and I can’t recommend this restaurant enough. Another table claiming to be a chef themself was praising the kitchen to our waitress. I kind of felt the same way
The oldest pub in the country. 1673. Beautiful outdoor fire pit- to be enjoyed when it is a bit warmer than 17 degrees. The atmosphere is old world charm. 4 fireplaces. Our good luck to be seated at the bar. Amazing bartender- she absolutely knew her craft. Bourbon, boulevardier & wine. Each of us enjoyed our fav. A real treasure.
Was expecting a little more savory for higher-priced options like these. Basic beef Wellington, nothing out of the ordinary, and the Ragout Bolognese was decent, but again, no more flavor than some local establishments here at home. Great atmosphere + the Halloumi cheese was definitely delicious! :-)
This was one of the best restaurant experiences we have ever had! We made a reservation in advance for two, and they were able to accommodate a last minute additionto our reservation with no problem. The food was visually beautiful and equally as delicious. The service was very cohesive and it felt like everyone had been working there for very long time. They were very attentive, but not overbearing. It is definitely expensive, but it is 100% worth it for the experience.
We ordered the steak frites, beef Wellington, French onion soup, and Caesar salad and a side of mashed potatoes - plus a champagne cocktail, and the fall draft beer... everything was incredible!
**Review of White Horse Tavern: A Culinary Journey Through History**
Nestled in the heart of Newport, Rhode Island, the White Horse Tavern stands as a testament to culinary tradition and rich history. As America's oldest operating restaurant, dating back 351 years, this iconic establishment offers not just a meal, but an experience that connects diners to the past while delighting their taste buds.
Upon entering the tavern, you're immediately enveloped in a warm, inviting atmosphere. The rustic charm of the wooden beams and historical decor sets the stage for a memorable dining experience. The ambiance is both elegant and cozy, making it perfect for a romantic dinner or a gathering with friends.
The menu is a celebration of classic American cuisine, and I was particularly excited to try their renowned Beef Wellington. This dish truly lives up to its reputation as the best in the area. The beef was cooked to perfection, and each bite melted in my mouth like butter. The flaky pastry enveloping the tender meat added a delightful crunch, elevating the dish to a level of culinary artistry that is rarely found.
Equally impressive were the scallops, seared to perfection. They were beautifully golden on the outside, with a delicate, buttery texture inside. Each scallop was seasoned impeccably, allowing the natural flavors to shine through. Paired with a light sauce that complemented rather than overwhelmed, it was a dish that showcased the chef's skill and attention to detail.
To finish off the meal on a sweet note, I indulged in the seasonal pumpkin bread pudding. This dessert was a delightful surprise, warm and comforting, with rich flavors that perfectly encapsulated the essence of fall. The bread pudding was moist and infused with spices, and the addition of a creamy sauce made it an irresistible finale to a fantastic meal.
In conclusion, dining at the White Horse Tavern is not just about the food—it's about indulging in a piece of history while enjoying some of the best dishes America has to offer. From the melt-in-your-mouth Beef Wellington to the perfectly seared scallops and comforting pumpkin bread pudding, every bite is a reminder of why this restaurant has stood the test of time. Whether you're a history buff or a food lover, the White Horse Tavern is an experience that should not be missed.
My husband and I came here and we could not have had a better Newport restaurant experience. We came here the day after dealing with a terribly rude manager experience from Clarke Cooke House, and we had only wished we knew sooner how incredible White Horse Tavern is.
We ordered the duck scotch egg, vegetables, and oysters as an appetizer. The scotch egg was indescribably good! I had the beef wellington for dinner which was mouthwatering - my husband had the Duck Confit. The meat was falling off the bone, it was cooked perfectly! We couldn't stop raving about our food over dinner. Every bite had us practically drooling!
Not to mention the historic and ambient atmosphere being the oldest operating restaurant in the US, and stellar service. We loved our dining experience here, and will recommend White Horse Tavern to any of our friends and family visiting Newport. When we visit again, we will absolutely come back!!
