My wife delivered our first born son at West Penn the other day and the experience was very positive! Delivery went mostly smoothly. Everyone was very friendly and attentive, the nurses explained things in detail and showed us lots of tips and tricks for breastfeeding, holding the baby, etc. Shout-outs to Dr. Street and Dr. Han in particular who were our main doctors during our visit and ensured my wife was as comfortable and calm as possible through labor, delivery, and postpartum. I also want to mention several of our nurses who were particularly helpful including Amber, Anastasia, and Nasim. Additionally I want to mention some of the other teams: dietary that cooked us a tasty celebration dinner among other meals, lactation who set us up for success, and the cleaning staff for, well, keeping things clean!
I went here when I was in labor, and I tried so hard to get over what happened, but I am a little bit traumatized… I knew what to do when I had contractions, I knew what to do when I went into labor, the doctor delivering my baby refused to let me push on time and I believe she is the reason that I tore. I would push during every contraction and she wouldn’t pay attention and then whenever I wasn’t contracting, she would try to force me to push more and tell me that I wasn’t doing a good job because I would take the moment after contractions to breathe before I pushed. She spent more time arguing with me than allowing me to have my baby. She also gaslit me into thinking that I could have a C-section by making me sign papers and telling me that they would get an OR ready, I had been in labor for over two days without my water breaking, and she insisted on a natural birth just to traumatize me with how I was treated. When I tour, I asked for no stitches and she told me that I would “thank her later” and I do not, I was planning to have this baby at home with my midwife, and I am very uncomfortable by the fact that I was forced into things that I didn’t want or need. Avoiding one stitch would not have effected my health, but it did effect my connection with my baby as the pain of that stitch was worse than letting it heal naturally, or actually considering my body while I was delivering. I understand this was a teaching hospital, but there needs to be consent. If my baby is going to be used to teach somebody while I am very freshly postpartum. Instead of getting to spend time with her holding my baby, I had to watch a nurse go over genetic mutations and talk about very scary topics in earshot of me… it was terrifying hearing a doctor talk about how some babies are born with teeth, mutations, and health problems, having to anxiously wait for her to say that my baby didn’t have them after the “lesson” while showing, holding, and using my baby’s body as a tool. The trauma and depression from this situation led me to attempt suicide and caused psychosis that made me remove the stitch myself… I am not the only person that experienced this from that doctor as other women have been forced into horrible situations and their staff needs evaluated and shown basic human decency since I should not have been forced to tears being told, I wasn’t doing a good job because a doctor didn’t want to pay attention to my body. I can’t say to not have your baby here because the other places aren’t better, but the people are more considerate.
I would like to thank the nurse that treated me like a person and let me hold her hand when they put in the epidural, but she is the only person that I can remember fondly.
I was very tired and dyslexic so I misspoke when telling them my baby’s name for the keepsake, instead of writing on a new paper, they scribbled out the misspelling and gave me a paper with a giant black blob that looked like a penis. I am heartbroken by the lack of care they had for me as a person.
Lastly, they gave my baby and I staph infections and told us it was just acne which led to becoming incredibly ill.
My family live in Bloomfield 29yrs. I got in the Emergency Department because I had diarrhea and threw up 2times in the last 10minutes in waiting room . After the nurse took out some of my blood and put the needle on me. I start feeling dizzy, head hurts my feet frozen and want to lay down. 2nurse were helping me to the bed right behind the check in nurse room. One of the nurse name Jodi were use her fit and pressed on my middle chest. I feel hurt so bad so I say. “It’s hurt”. Instead STOP doing that she used her fit hand and press on my middle chest again. This time I hurt so bad that I opened my eyes bigger and got her name Jodi from name tag and I tell her :”Stop! You hurt me”. Nurse name Sara were didn’t want to confirm me Jodi is that nurse name when she walk passed my bed 2times. And Sara said to me is all we can do is give u pain relief. When I say I don’t want pain relief I want to speak to the manager of the nurse about this situation. Sara just ignored me and Jodi from the nurse registered room come out talk to Sara. She doesn’t want pain relief medication just ignore her there. Terrible unprofessional behavior for the nurse to the patient . Nurse cover for another nurse mistake when patient want to let the manager nurse know what is going on. Thanks God I am not old because with her fit press on old people could crack old patients chest. That why I need to talk to management nurses about this issue and let the hospital stop her doing this to the patient
I have THE WORST EXPERIENCE at this hospital. I have a 24 year Autistic son who is non-verbal. My son was suppose to have a tooth extraction done at Allegheny General Hospital Oral Surgery on Decemeber 20th.
We were informed that\because my son has Autism, he would need to complete some pre-op testing before they could do surgery. On December 12th, we went into the PCP office and completed the required testing. I visited his MyChart to see if the result were in the system and they were not. I received a call stating that my sons blood was left behind something in the refrigerator, and it never made to the lab. I now have to subject my some to more pain of get more blood drawn and all they could say is I'm sorry. BE CAREFUL YOUR BLOOD WORK COULDBE SWITCHED OR LOST... SIGNED PISSED OFF
Malpractice that Endangered My Mother’s Life.
I want to share the horrifying experience my family faced at West Penn Hospital, exposing the extreme negligence of their medical team. My mother was diagnosed with melanoma, and despite a detailed PET scan reporting two tumors, the oncologist and surgeon only operated on one—and even missed that one! They sent her home claiming she was cancer-free. For three months, we believed them, only to discover during a follow-up PET scan that nothing had been addressed. Worse, when confronted, both the surgeon and oncologist lied right to my face, trying to cover up their mistake.
Adding to their incompetence, they proceeded with the surgery despite an inconclusive mammogram, which they required beforehand. Why insist on tests if you're not even going to read them?
After we switched to another hospital system, my mother’s treatment finally began, but the melanoma had already spread—likely because it went untreated for so long. She’s now been under treatment for two years, a battle that could have been different had West Penn done their job.
This is a warning to anyone trusting their lives to West Penn’s oncology and surgical teams. Their negligence and dishonesty have caused irreparable damage, and I urge you to seek care elsewhere if you value your health and safety.
They deserve 0 stars.
I recently had major abdominal surgery and stayed in the hospital a week. The nursing care was fine and my doctor and his staff were great. My two MAJOR complaints are the cafeteria food. Part of recovering and healing includes nutrition. The food is completely inedible. The absolute worst garbage. Everyone there complained about the food. I lost a lot of weight that week which I couldn’t afford to do. I understand that efforts to improve the menus were rejected. I would love to have the cafeteria cater the next board meeting.
Secondly, housekeeping did not clean the bathroom like they should. Never once did she clean the sink. I know because there was a red speck that I kept an eye on. On my last day I took a paper towel with soap and cleaned the sink and the spot came right off. Not sure if she cleaned the toilet either. She should not be working on a post surgical unit. I told my doctor I’m never coming back to WPH.
For the past 6+ months I've been going here for seasons OB and Maternal Fetal Medicine for my pregnancy, the staff in both of those places are amazing, I wish I could name them all but I can't... Let's just say not a single person in either group has been unpleasant. They've all made me feel so safe and so cared for through this very rough pregnancy and I would highly recommend them time and time again. Now the labor and delivery team is just as amazing, I was induced a week ago and it took a day and a half leaning more on two days from being induced to actually giving birth and my nurses and doctors were amazing, specifically Amanda and Melina, Melina was training, and then Grace as well, they took the best care of me and didn't let me go through any more discomfort than necessary, they were so attentive and mostly so sweet. The anesthesiologist did a perfect job with my epidural and later giving me meds to help with pain as the epidural stopped helping during pushing. The antipartum and postpartum team were also amazing too, I was very out of it from having to be on magnesium but they were also very attentive and kind. The surgical team who did my C-section also did a fantastic job, I just got the pico dressing taken off today and the incision looks so good, there was hardly any bleeding on the bandage. If I ever get pregnant again I definitely will be choosing West Penn.
Where do I begin. Hands down, the best L&D hospital in the Pittsburgh area.
After having an emergency situation happen at 34.5 weeks pregnant, within 24 hours of arriving at WPH, our OBGYN wanted us to deliver.
The nurses, doctors, and staff at WPH have been nothing but amazing. Having an emergency cesarean section surgery and being beyond terrified and just overwhelmed at how unexpected and traumatic my pregnancy was going, the team of doctors, nurses, anesthesiologists in the operating room for the c-section took an absolutely terrified and horrible situation and walked me through everything, comforted me, and made sure that I actually was in good hands. The thoughtfulness, care and kindness in a scary situation was indescribable. Thank you to everyone in the room who brought our sweet baby girl into this world safely, but also watched over me with impeccable care.
During my short stay on the L&D floor I had the most outstanding nurse, Jenna G my initial evening and I asked if she would be available to be with me for the surgery, she switched around her assignment to be next to me. The nurse is beyond special!
During a huge life event, mothers, fathers and family members want to be cared for with the best of care, I can’t speak more highly of my current situation (still in the hospital as I write this). Look no further if your insurance company covers WPH care, you won’t regret it.
