I came here for lunch around 11:00 on 12/10. I was pleasantly surprised by how much more there was here than just a restaurant. After walking around and checking out the attractions, I went to the hostess to be immediately seated. I was warmly welcomed, and after looking over the menu, I decided to try the Mountain Oysters. You don’t see those on many menus! And I was very impressed with how delicious they were. They were tender and the breading was crisp and full of flavor. But I couldn’t leave without trying a steak! I got the lunch ribeye with a loaded baked potato. The steak was cooked to the temperature I ordered, and the potato was phenomenal. It was a delicious meal for a reasonable price. And while you eat, a musician walked around playing requests for each table. Overall it was a very memorable experience, with great food, and I had a good time!
Very fun place to visit and enjoy. Atmosphere is wonderful. Was all decorated up for Christmas, very lively with roaming musicians taking requests and playing old cowboy songs. Food was incredible with generous portions. No one in our group attempted the 72 oz steak challenge (can't imagine even trying that). Service was great and considering how large the dining area is plus the amount of people, we could still have a conversation across the table with ease. Gift shop has a lot of things to purchase. Great experience, highly recommend.
We had a great Thanksgiving dinner here last night. We came because they were one of the only places open on the holiday but we are so glad we came. We had to wait maybe 15 minutes to be seated but the line moved quickly and the fun couple from Canada in front of us made the time pass quickly. We were seated upstairs which I liked as all the tables were individual as opposed to some of the farm style seating downstairs. Our waitress Emily greeted us warmly and gave us menus and the rundown. We ordered drinks and an appetizer and enjoyed the festive atmosphere. I ended up with the beef tips (served over mashed potatoes) and my husband got a steak. My beef tips were the big winner although the rolls were splendid, slightly sweet and soft without being mushy. The service was fantastic, Emily checked in with us many times over the course of our meal. I can’t imagine how many times those folks climb the stairs but they are a hardworking group. We couldn’t have been happier with our experience here and will be glad to come back next time we’re in town.
The Big Texan Steak Ranch was wonderful! We had a wonderful experience. OH BOY, it was DELICIOUS! The product quality is outstanding. The prices are great for what you get. Our steaks were cooked perfectly. The location is clean and so big, full of color and very beautiful. This facility is a must-see if you're passing by Amarillo. The decor is nice and the gift shop is so big. Service was good, friendly, and very attentive waitress. Loved the sweet tea! Texas has the BEST sweet tea. ????
My husband I went on a whim. We planned on going on a Friday night and we called about 2 hours before we planned to eat there and they were out of reservations, but we could come in and join the waitlist. Okay, no big deal.
We got there and the line is from the hostess stand to the front door, but it’s moving quickly. The hostess tells us it’s going to be a 45 minute wait, but we were prepared for something like that, so we stayed. We wandered around the property, tried out our aim at the play gun range, browsed the gift shop, and within 10 minutes our table was ready.
We were able to sit upstairs which had a nice view of the whole dining area and competition table.
Our waitress was super friendly and helpful with the menu and got us our drinks and rolls to the table right away. I got the filet with mashed potatoes and a side garden salad. My husband got the porterhouse with potato salad and French fries (he’s on a gluten free diet, so options are limited for him).
The food was all very good. The steaks needed some finishing salt or a garlic butter or something on top, but the sides were all delicious.
Boss Lady and I finally decided to try out the breakfast. We've been coming here usually for lunch or dinner, which is always great. But, breakfast was a whole new experience. We love it when they decorate for Christmas.
I ordered the chicken and waffles. The chicken was not crispy and lacked flavor. Surprisingly, although the waffles looked burnt they were soft (in a bad way), I prefer them crunchy and they give you two of them, which is one too many. The syrup was definitely not from a maple tree, but at least they have real butter.
She ordered the steak and eggs. The steak was delicious, as always, and the eggs were cooked over-medium as requested. But the potatoes were cold, rubbery and flavorless. Like they had been sitting around for some time in a cold pan.
We also tried the French toast, which was just Okay. I don't know where they get their coffee or who's making it, but it was really weak.
Overall, it was like-luster so we'll definitely NOT be having breakfast here again.
The Big Texan in Amarillo is not just a restaurant—it’s an arena. I walked in expecting a meal and left feeling like I’d just witnessed the Hunger Games: Steak Edition.
The highlight? Watching brave souls attempt the infamous 72-ounce steak challenge. It’s a spectacle. These people didn’t order dinner—they signed up for a meat marathon. One guy looked so confident at first, cutting into his steak with the swagger of a cowboy. By the halfway mark, he looked like he was reconsidering all his life choices.
Another contestant powered through the steak, the shrimp cocktail, the baked potato, and the salad… only to hit the dinner roll and fold like a deck of cards. I’m pretty sure the roll won.
Meanwhile, I enjoyed my normal-sized meal (which was delicious, by the way) with the kind of smug satisfaction you only feel when someone else is struggling and you’re not. Big Tex is like dinner and a reality show rolled into one—totally worth the visit.
Would I ever try the challenge? Absolutely not. But will I come back to watch others battle the beef? Every chance I get.
Had a fun experience at Big Texan! Arrived around 7:30 on a Thursday night, had a 10 minute wait. Draft Beers made in house, Raspberry Wheat Ale was tasty! Food and beer were great prices! Our server Jakie, was knowledgeable and friendly, and she took great care of us! Food was fresh, & The salads were served on cold plates. The 10 oz prime rib & 20 oz steak were delicious! The Loaded sweet potato was next level! Many things to see and do, and a cool store to buy gifts and souvenirs! Had desserts displayed in a fridge to see what they looked like, the chocolate cake was good!
