Best WLM Reviews
In contrast to the other reviews, we got the double dipped beef dip sandwich and it was super dry and kinda flavourless. The pickled egg just tasted like beets and was average. The place is cool though with neat decor giving it lots of character and the service was great. The food was just average to us but perhaps we need to try other items like the potato salad and tapioca pudding which looked good.
Stopped by Philippe the Original the other day and grabbed their beef on a white roll. Gotta say, it was pretty awesome. The beef was nice and juicy, perfectly seasoned, and piled high on that soft white roll. Every bite was just right – no soggy bread or dry meat here.
The place has this old-school vibe that’s kinda cool. It feels like stepping back in time with all the classic decor and that bustling atmosphere. Even though it can get pretty busy, the service was solid. The staff were friendly and got my order out quickly without any mix-ups.
I also appreciated the little extras, like their horseradish sauce that added a nice kick to the sandwich. It’s those small touches that make the meal stand out. Plus, the prices were reasonable for what you get – a hearty, satisfying sandwich that hits the spot without emptying your wallet.
If you’re in the mood for a tasty beef sandwich and want to soak up some classic LA history, Philippe the Original is definitely worth a visit. I’ll probably swing by again next time I’m craving something delicious and want to enjoy that old-timey charm.
Honestly blew me away. I got the beef dip, double dipped with added provolone cheese.
Fantastic. Meat without gristle. Great flavor, good bread, quality and quantity of beef.
I also got a large chili add cheese.
Absolutely fantastic!
Both items went above and beyond my expectations.
Staff was quick, they were friendly, they were competent!
Delightful staff! Paulina was so nice! 1st time, got the turkey double dip and you can’t go wrong with anything double dipped ???? Potato salad was fire too. Pay homage to this historic establishment in LA!
Philippe The Original - Where Nostalgia Meets Flavor
Stepping into Philippe The Original feels like taking a time machine back to simpler days—especially when you head upstairs. The seating area? Total vintage vibes, like you’re back in elementary school, complete with the charm of a classic classroom setup. It’s quirky, unexpected, and honestly just adds to the whole experience.
Now, let’s talk food. I went for the famous French dip sandwich, and it did NOT disappoint. The bread was perfectly soft yet sturdy enough to hold all that juicy goodness. Paired it with some chips, a classic brownie, and lemonade for that nostalgic lunchbox feel. Everything hit just right, like comfort food elevated.
Philippe’s is the kind of spot that’s casual but iconic, where locals and out-of-towners vibe over timeless flavors. If you’re into spots with character and history (plus great food), this place is a must. Pro tip: Grab a seat upstairs if you can—it’s a whole vibe.
This place was awesome! Really cool vibe. All kinds of stuff on the walls. The waitress at the counter was so friendly. We joked while she was preparing my dish. I got a lamb dip sandwich, extra dip on the side, pickle and potato salad. Yummy potato salad. Big portions, too. No rushing or anything and a nice mix of people. It's so close to Union Station
Stopped by to try their well known sandwiches before heading out to a Dodger game. Atmosphere is good, really mellow and friendly. Parking was available at the time of dining which is a plus. Pricing is bit bit on the higher side, but it is adequate for for the quality. Sandwiches were just right, not greasy like most places. The service was good considering the amount of high traffic place. I would recommend this place, must try.
It was my first time here and it is different from Coles which has more of a Pub feel and look to it. Coles beef was much more rare and leaner meat, but Phillippe's has much more to offer food wise. You can have breakfast, lunch and dinner and they have more seating (an entire are upstairs). When you order your beef dip (or other meat dip) you have a choice of 1 side, 2 side or wet...this refers to one side of the bread wet, 2 sides wet or fall apart wet. You can get different sides with your meal. A good place and I will be back! ;)
