Best WLM Reviews
This museum is still the most amazing museum I've had the opportunity to visit. I've been here three times and I learn and understand something new and do my best to understand a new perspective. Highly recommended to go earlier on a weekday if you have the chance. It'll allow you to browse slowly, without too much interruption. If this is your first time, plan for at least 3 hours if moving quickly through the exhibits, but it's easy to spend over 4 hours here.
This museum was filled with such rich history it was more than I anticipated. This was the highlight of our anniversary trip. The displays, the artwork, the music in each exhibit made me feel like I had traveled back in time. I felt immersed in black culture. Some rooms were interactive. It was such a cool experience i plan on bringing my kids back. I can't rave about this place enough ,10 out 10. We also had lunch in the cafe and the food was great. They were able to have the lines moving efficiently with the hundreds of people ordering food at the same time..Now the only con is this place is humongous and you will need to take breaks and please put on your walking shoes.
Plan enough time for the full journey. We were there for 2 hours and didn't even get halfway through. So much to learn, well beyond what I expected. Facilities (including lockers) are excellent.
Tickets are free but should be reserved in advance.
Tickets are FREE, just need to reserve them in advance or pray they have availability the day and time you walk up. Public, federal holidays street parking is free- no need to plug meters. We arrived a little after 12 noon and stayed until we were kicked out at closing 5:30 pm and still didn’t get through all of the exhibits. You truly need at least 2 days. If you try to cram it like we did, you will check out after a while and your feet and whatever else will start to hurt from all the walking and standing.
Extremely fascinating, educational and informative for floors C1-C3. Cafe is decent- bar array of options, but a bit pricey and cannot take food to go- so be prepared for that. I skipped over and skimmed L1 and L2- due to the reasons I mentioned above and that several other African American museums cover similar information. I did not make it to L3 and missed large portions of L1/2. I saw the car and green book, some digital, interactive exhibits. Missed chunks of Sports History and completely ran out of time for the top floor which i believe is music and culture. Also several exhibits were closed- Oprah Theater, Bank of America Special Collections gallery and a couple others on level C.
Steve, at the front desk was friendly and so were countless others from cafe workers to elevator operators and exhibit staff. Restrooms were clean, tidy and well stocked.
I would absolutely return again with my family and suggest that everyone visit.
What a great museum! I grew up in the north and much of what was presented in I didn't have a clue about. Very impaction for American History! Both the good and the BAD! I now live in the south and have a better understanding of the attitudes, fears and concerns for both black and white Americans. We can't change if we don't understand where we came from. Wife and I spent 4 hrs here and only saw about 30%. There are artifacts, videos, placards showing all aspects. I think they did right by NOT making it political and only representing the facts. I also think that both black and white people respect each other as they visit... if you choose to go here you are choosing to learn. Learning removes ignorance and I believe much of our collective ignorance is not knowing.
We had a great time. The exhibits are excellent and beautiful. Well, wort the visit. Kid friendly and great for large group of people. Food courts and plenty of restrooms are easily accessible. Parking is an overall headache, and I would recommend taking one of the many busses or alternatives such as the guided tours. If you're on a budget, good luck with the traffic.
Wonderful Museum, from the beautiful and distinct external architecture, to the art and history inside. It's a place to reflect and learn, no matter what race you are. To see what our people have endured, overcome, and continue to endure and overcome is sobering. The heaviest and most emotional part is the Emit Till installation. You can literally spend an entire day in this museum, there is so much to learn and absorb. Tickets are free, but you can choose to make a donation, which I recommend if you can.
Simple, free and enlightening. I enjoyed the second floor the most with interactive learning exhibits on a few specific subjects and a display that took a broader look at what makes African American culture what it was and is. A dance lesson, education on the green book, and finding remnants of the last slave ship were all great ways to make me curious to learn more.
