This place is awesome! It's an immersive experience. The displays are something that is experiential. Going into the 360° video board of the artistic area is like wow! The multitude of the diversity of visitors was so encouraging. Sadly the outside doors on the side we went into looked like the upkeep is lacking. And it is. But the interior is beautiful and super clean and organized. This is a crown jewel that all Americans should see.
You definitely need 2 full days to view everything, super comfy shoes are highly recommended! This place is filled with great artifacts and information! I am happy this is all on display. I discovered so many amazing nuggets of knowledge that I did not have before! All available for free (we should all offer some kind of donation to keep these doors open though!) Highly recommended!
Truly an amazing museum. So much history, pain, wonderment and hope for the future. Get tickets online ahead of time because it gets packed. Be sure to have at least 3 hrs to see everything. It's very close quarters inside and alot of the museum is non directed so you'll have foot traffic inside going all directions. That being said, bring a mask if you are worried about people sneezing and coughing right next to you. It WILL happen. There are very few places to sit inside the exhibits so if you have issues standing it could be a problem. There are bench seating areas on multiple levels with videos playing on a large screen right outside of the exhibit halls so you can sit there for a bit. There is a food court but it closes earlier than the museum. Take an Uber, train or walk there because parking is insane. There are some amazing things to see inside and some extremely tragic and powerful things to see. Be respectful of others because some people may experience certain exhibits differently than you. There will be people crying, laughing and of course kids having fun. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
It is a museum you must visit. Thorough story telling in the main galleries of the struggles and triumphs of African Americans and their ancestors. Definitely not a light exhibit, but one that is extremely important for all of us to learn about, regardless of whether you are a visitor or resident of the US.
My DC friends informed me that you need to reserve a ticket and they book out quite quickly so I took what I can. In hindsight I would've book a ticket (FREE) for earlier in the day, because there were the other galleries I wish to spend more time in - especially the Music gallery up in level 3. I caught a few things in the closing moments of the museum. Would definitely visit again, if I was ever in DC again.
P.S. it is definitely a museum you can easily spend half (if not the whole) day at - if you want to digest everything thoroughly. There is a line at the entrance of the main galleries after you enter the museum building and that can take a little longer.
Got to visit the galleries and go behind the scenes for a meeting with Smithsonian Institution colleagues. What a beautiful building, deeply engaging exhibits, and great view of the National Mall. Security staff were all very kind and professional as we entered. Great quality food for lunch. The museum store was packed - it would be great if it was a bit more spread out.
I have been wanting to visit since it opened and finally got the chance. It's a spectacular museum with in depth history, many historical artifacts and a lot of information. There is also audio and video content interspersed throughout the exhibits. We were there for about 2 hours, though we could've stayed longer. The current Afrofuturism exhibit is great too. Lots of pop culture memorabilia, music, film and costumes. Admission is free (donations are welcome). It's best to plan ahead and book your timed entry ticket in advance as times do fill up!
An outstanding and heartbreaking history from the time humans were sold and how they were treated. You start in the museum's basement and as your tour moves upwards your spirits begin to rise as you realize you can make a difference by understanding how important it is to see our black sisters and brothers as wonderful as you see your own family. This is a must see if your visiting Washington DC. Plan on 4 hours minimum and more if you are an educator.
First time here and this is an amazing space! You know a lot of these things but here you see it more in depth. Things they don't go into in general educational society. I see why people say you need multiple days to conquer it all because I don't think we even got through a fourth of it.
It's informational yet somewhat heartbreaking at the same time.
Definitely a great space for those that don't know and want to learn so that we don't repeat this history. At the same time it's empowering to know that we as a people have come so far!
