Wow did I have a great day here! If you love art especially renaissance art like myself this place has it all! The collection is extensive beautiful and very well placed. I went on Thursday afternoon and was lucky to have whole rooms to myself. There is so much to look at I want able to do it all. Administration was free for me! I would love to come back and just spend another day here! Highly recommend!
Had the best and most surreal experience visiting this gallery. I’m a total art lover convert now. Super grateful for the free entry to this gallery otherwise I don’t know if I would’ve ever had this kind of experience.
Each and every room of the gallery takes you through different stories and culture. You could get lost in the paintings and sculptures.
Absolutely stunning museum with an expansive collection of art. The collection offered here is truly stunning and outstanding. All facilities, exhibits, and sanctuaries within the gallery are meticulously arranged and decorated beautifully. All staff I encountered were incredibly kind and knowledgeable. When I visited, certain rooms were being renovated (I believe the impressionist rooms). A very kind staff member at an information desk marked a map where certain pieces of art I wanted to see had been relocated. She also suggested I download the National Gallery of Art app which had information about all the art, and recommended free tours offered by the museum. Overall, this is an excellently beautiful museum in DC with an expansive collection that anyone who enjoys viewing art will absolutely love.
Incredible collection and execution. Family and kid friendly - first Saturday arts and crafts are a can’t miss. Cafeteria in the basement is great as is the small coffee shop upstairs in the east building. Don’t miss the east building roof. Nighttime events are even better - if you can get tickets through the lottery. The best public art museum in the country, if not the world.
We saw a few highlights at the end of the day. Still worth visiting even if 30-40 minutes with the art. (I posted the ones with animals - especially dogs). You can't wear a backpack with both straps on your back. It has to be on the front or with 1 strap. If planning a long day, plan a locker or small bag.
Free entry. No slot booking needed. We visited here on two mornings and went to Space museum on evenings. Stunningly beautiful art. I would recommend getting a map and visiting the galleries in reverse order. Galleries are often chronologically ordered, and modern artwork is much better compared to 15/16 centuries artwork. There were also few artists who were recreating paintings. Food is pricey.
Beautiful museum with art collections from various time periods.
These were the tours I visited on Saturday, May 18, and found all of them very engaging, information, and fun:
- (Re)Discover the Natural Museum of Art
- Italian Renaissance Collection
- Exhibition Tour: An Anxious Eye
I arrived at 10:00 AM (right when it opens), so the museum wasn’t very crowded. Passed security in <2 minutes. Cafe lines can get crowded throughout the days as more visitors come in. Highly recommend visiting and coming back.
The art and history here is astounding! Enjoyed my visit and could have spent many more hours exploring the galleries. I hope I have a chance to go back in the near future.
