We were passing by and saw the crazy long queue that went around the block, and were intrigued. So glad we googled, wise would have missed the amazing delicious food! Got the tan tan and my partner had chicken teriyaki and we both really enjoyed it. The queues definitely move fast although it wasn’t crazy long after 1pm. Gave fewer stars for atmosphere as where we were sitting inside was quite hot and more after eating the delicious bowls.
Popular noodle option that’s great for a cold day. The lines are long but they move really fast. You order cafeteria style which seems odd but it works. Don’t forget to pick up some tempura pieces to go with your udon
Came here on a Monday evening for dinner with my family (including 2 little kids). We came at around 7:30 pm and the line outside was long but not as long as a weekend night. We must have waited about 30 minutes to get inside. Once inside, it works like a cafeteria where you ask for the food you want, place the food on your tray, and pay at the counter at the end of the line. They prepare the food pretty quickly for you. Plus, the tempura and add-ons are self-serve as they are already cooked.
The food was delicious and well worth the wait! We got tonkotsu udon, chicken katsu curry, spam musubi, tamagoyaki, and tempura. The portions were pretty good for the price.
The staff were friendly and helpful. A staff member helped us look for a table and cleaned our table for us. The place is incredibly busy. It may take a while to get a table once you have your food because you might have to wait for others to leave, which is what we saw some customers doing while we were waiting to get in. I think we got lucky and found a table right away because it was already a little late in the evening. The location is great because it’s right by the souvenir marketplace.
Overall, we had a wonderful experience here and would definitely come back!
Marugame udon!!! How I miss this place!!! I’m so glad that we got to come here and had delicious upon!!! The texture of udo is flavorful and beautiful chewiness! The broth is matched perfectly and orchestrated well in the mouth! I got a large bowl of bukkake (BK) udon with season eggs while my wife got tantan udon ???? both are so delicious! If you’d like to have an amazing Japanese udon experience, a must come here for sure!
It’s definitely worth it. Besides what you mainly order, you can pick some toppings on the way to the cashier so you can make your bowl even fancier! Come visit and enjoy the Japanese gourmet!
Cheers ????
It's a good udon, but I don't think there's anything overly special about it. We ate here on our previous trip to Hawaii 5 years ago and twice again this time. I've given it 5 stars given the bang for your buck compared to how much everything else costs in Hawaii now. There's not much you can buy for around $10 that is delicious, in a seated restaurant, and that will fill you up.
If your question is "is it worth to take all this line ?" The answer is a definitive yes. There is a good reason for the line and the good reviews. Also the line goes fast. Everything looks fresh on the food side. The temps are great and the taste on the different bowls is really really good. We went with the rice dishes and we were satisfied. A good place to come again tomorrow. And we went there again today. As good as yesterday
Sure it’s good udon, but it’s not special. It’s just a tasty udon place that is fairly priced and tastes consistent each time you go. Went on a Thursday night and waited ~30 minutes. This can be called as an internet famous restaurant. It’s good but not so good that you should wait any longer than 30 minutes at most. You can probably finish a meal here if there wasn’t a line, in less than 15 minutes. The ingredients are high quality though so overall a good restaurant but not worth the hype.
The food is delicious, hot, and savory. Popular place, always busy. Line goes fast though. Tables are available but limited. No bathrooms on site. Decent prices. A local favorite! View of street and people standing in line to order.
