If what you're looking for is a truck stop restaurant, you'll probably be pleased when you come in. It is located near the back of a Sapp Brothers truck stop/gas station. Across the front of the restaurant there is a counter, and tables are arranged through the rest of the restaurant. At the entrance there is a cooler displaying a variety of pies that you can order by the slice or take an entire pie along with you when you leave.
Service is prompt, the waitresses are friendly, and the serving sizes are generous. One of the best items I've found on their breakfast menu are the seasoned potatoes (photo below), they have an intriguing variety of spices on them, and they are properly crisped for texture. The sausage links I had were not the usual store-bought that you can make for yourself at home, and were better than average in flavor. Eggs sunny side up had lacy edges, something that a good fry cook knows how to create.
I didn't get a picture, but patrons near me ordered chicken fried steaks. The steaks almost covered the plate and were covered in country gravy. Their eggs and potatoes came on a separate plate. Unless you've got a huge appetite, I doubt that you'd manage to finish that meal. Definitely worth the price, which they had originally questioned as being out of line with some of the other breakfast options on the menu.
The prices are reasonable, portions generous and atmosphere is friendly. I try and get there every month or so, and I have yet to be disappointed. It's located just a minute off of I-80 at the 24th Street exit in Council Bluffs, really convenient if you're just traveling through the area.
All of their employees are all very pleasant and provide great customer service with a smile. Their bathrooms are always clean. The Apple Barrell restaurant had amazing service and food. This is one of our favorite places to shower because we know that it is cleaned how a bathroom/shower should be cleaned. Shower number 10 is our favorite because they have dual shower heads, so my wife and I can shower at the same time, and it even has a bathtub if you prefer taking a bath over a shower. We're so thankful for this Sapp Bros. Location and all of the other locations they have in the country because they all are very nice and clean and unlike any of the other truck stops. Thank you all for being such amazing and kind people and always putting a smile on all of us who frequently stop at your locations.
I gave 1 stars some areas was 0 stars , it was dirty most tables piled with dirty dishes long wait before we even seen a waitress and then there was only 1, eggs looked like they was cooked on a dirty grill did not eat them will not go back, they advertise a lot on billboards they should not they should close up before someone gets sick ! Bacon was Burnt
This place is very comfortable and quiet and the waitresses are super sweet. But honestly, my favorite part of this restaurant is the bathroom lol. I have never been in such a fancy bathroom in my life. Just go there. Unfortunately, the men do not have a bathroom like us women do so it sucks to be men but, if you are a woman you will absolutely love the bathroom. Lol.
The food is delicious and well prepared. The last thing I had there the last time I went there was the chef salad and it was amazing. Highly recommend it.
The gift shop next to the restaurant is also a nice place to go and look around or purchase something too. A lot of pretty and inexpensive items.
I am an OTR Box truck driver. I was parked across the street from the Sapp Bros truck stop. I found out they had a restaurant in side called the Apple Barrel inside the truck stop. I ordered the make your own omelette. I was pleasantly surprised when I took my first bite and notice fresh jalapeños! , then I was noticing all of the ingredients I ordered were fresh as well. Natalie was my waitress she was really polite! Here’s something that doesn’t happen often. I have certain dietary restrictions when I told her I didn’t want any bread products she asked me if I would like a fruit cup or a protein like cottage cheese instead! No one has asked about an alternative to bread, Bravo to you. And thank you. The food tasted great.
This was our visit time visiting an Apple Barrel. It is inside a truck stop. The staff were friendly. The food was good. I asked for crispy bacon and it was perfect! We didn't have to wait very long for our food either. It was affordable too.
I stopped in here and had the burnt ends. Also had mashed taters and gravy with a side salad (lettuce and cheese) with French dressing. The meal was good. The burnt ends were a little too burnt for me but in fairness I'm not a big fan of burnt anything. They were however, very tender! I ordered them because a friend of mine told me they were really good and even though I don't generally like burnt, they were pretty good all things considered. My waitress(wait person, server, not sure of the non offensive word), Jerika was good about keeping drinks topped off. She was also friendly. Over all it was good and I'll be back at some point.
The staff were very polite and didn't ask how things were or any other questions until 1 of us were able to answer without a mouth full. We weren't rushed at all. The food was great and reasonably priced. We really enjoyed our meal there. If my daughters and myself are down that way again we will be eating there again.
