I am compelled to warn other travelers NOT to stay here. The online listing describes a budget accommodation, but during our 2-night stay, it became apparent that it serves as temporary housing for families struggling financially or otherwise. Our room was superficially clean, but the bedding and carpeting were thread-bare and the bathroom was in bad shape. Worse yet, I left with bug bites on the back of one hand, on my neck and on one leg. I am suspicious these were bedbugs. Fortunately, we did not bring home an infestation – though I immediately and thoroughly cleaned all our clothes and sequestered my luggage and toiletry bags, which will remain so for 6 months per online guidance. I found this place through the CitiBank/CitiTravel online portal which uses Booking.com. The description and pictures do not match reality. I submitted a complaint with CitiTravel/CitiBank stating this NEEDS TO BE REMOVED from CitiTravel/Booking.com. It should NOT be offered anywhere. The complaint is unresolved and the listing remains online.
Often the cheapest hotel in Bethesda, the American Inn & Suites offers clean and compact rooms with a comfortable bed. The check-in process includes a $50 deposit for incidentals. The rooms and hotel (as a whole) are a bit outdated and the WiFi didn’t work at all during our visit. Not to mention in our part of the building Verizon often struggled to find a speedy cellular connection unless we were close to a window, very inconvenient to say the least.
The front desk offered to print my documents for me because their printer was down in the business center.
You can stay at a better place for cheaper and stretch your dollars further.
In total, would not recommend.
Although our room was fine on the 4th floor, the rest of the hotel was gross. We found out right before our stay that homeless people are living this hotel - it was too late to cancel. Avoid the bottom few floors. Someone peed in the elevator and it wasn’t cleaned up til the next morning. The night receptionist (bigger guy) was high as a kite and the lobby smelled like the marijuana. Sack breakfast was fine and probably the best part of our stay (Apple, yogurt, muffin, juice, water). Close to grocery store and transit. Although it was one of the cheaper hotels in the area, just don’t stay here. Don’t recommend
In spite of its reputation, it has a good amount of vintage charm, or authenticity. Granted, the hotel could use some significant maintenance could, but the essentials are there: clean sheets, decent mattress, flushing toilet and working shower with hit water. Can't beat it for the price!
The place was alright. The location wasn't bad either. Bathroom could use some work but not a dealbreaker. Parking is extremely small and limited. But for the price it's understandable.
However the service was terrible. I went to get tp for my room. Was a big guy at the desk at the time, had glasses and a Hawaiian shirt. He was incoherent to say the least. Stayed in his phone and didn't respond to me the first few times. Then caught an attitude when I asked a third.
Spoke to the woman after me with a complete 180 on his attitude, seems a bit racist to me. Following morning I went to check out early and the desk was empty. Heard loud snoring in the back, so I just left my keycard on the front desk and left. Rather unprofessional but again not bad for the price.
This was truly a disgusting experience. One star flatters this place. Here are things to consider:
- the pictures on Expedia having nothing to do with this place. It looks like some kind of upscale business hotel. This could not be further from the truth
- when we checked in there were children running around the street begging for money.
- we found out that they put up homeless people. While this is laudable and humane…THIS IS NOT WHAT I SIGNED UP FOR.
- the room was tiny and had a smell of old vomit or urine…not sure but very disgusting
- my wife pulled up the mattress cover to find (dead) black bugs. When we showed them to proprietor they suggested it was actually pieces of plastic…never seen pieces of plastic with legs on them
- we were charged by Expedia for the entire stay prior to arrival and are still trying to get reimbursed for this. Accept the fact that perhaps we are responsible for one night, but the reality is that Expedia did a sloppy and deceitful job in now this hotel was represented. I am not an elitist by any means but this experience was truly disgusting
Absolute garbage hotel. Hair, mold, stains, they've got it all. It's not just one room either, both rooms had these issues (see the photos). They posted photos online that make it look decent, then they just never cleaned the rooms after that. There is a dumpster in front the entrance. And not just like 100 ft in front of the entrance, it's like 10 feet in front so that you walk past it as you enter the building. This company should be shut down for making people stay in filth.
The rooms on their website do not reflect the actual rooms in any way. They are filthy. It's clear that they do not care about cleaning. There is mold, hair, stains, you name it, you'll find it in their rooms. We asked for a refund twice and they refused. All they offered was to switch rooms to another room which was still very awful. There are lots of other places to stay in downtown Bethesda, don't stay here.
