It was a must-try Detroit original food, and it did not disappoint. The buns were soft, and the hot dog had a nice crunch and deliciousness. The toppings of meat sauce, mustard, and onions took it to the next level.
Came here for the first time....and of course we went to their friend next door. Interesting as it seems like 80% of reviews like Lafayette Coney Island better than American but at least on this night both my dining companion and I liked American better. Sauce was more spicy and had more depth. LaFayette sauce to us seemed like canned hot dog sauce. Detroit icon!
A Detroit staple, good dogs, I prefer the neighbor a bit more but this is a classic establishment serving exactly what you want. Line can get long, inside nice and grungy. What you’d expect from this place.
Had the snappiest hot dog ever here. The service was delightful and the fries were piping hot. I walked past this place headed to another eatery and the smells emitting from inside made me do a u-turn and I ended up sitting down for a
Bite.
The coney and the special were ok. The staff is very friendly and it's fun to compare with next door. The food is extremely hot.
American Coney Island is a staple of downtown Detroit located right next to Campus Martias in the heart of the city. They keep the menu simple serving traditional Coney dogs and Greek gyros and salad...also offer beer and kits to go. Be sure to try the Coney I love the snap of the hot dog especially!

As soon as I got to Detroit, I went and search of one of their famous hotdogs. I landed at the American Coney Island shop, which I was super pleased with from the time I walked in the door to the time I left people were very friendly and attentive to each person. Greeting me from the time I came in the door, allowing me to sit wherever I was most comfortable and then Out of the most delicious hotdog I have ever had. I ended up having two Coney Island dogs an order of fries and a Pepsi and my bill was roughly $15 to me and today’s day was a great surprise for Price. Food quality was really good. Food tasted great. Service was nice overall, I would absolutely recommend this place especially if you’re looking for a quick bite to eat at a relatively good price.
