I first came across amalazone on Instagram. So, last Sunday my family decided to have lunch there. Myself and my daughter opted for gbegiri and ewedu with amala while my husband had efo riro.
My daughter said the soup was salty but to me it had no taste. I could not eat it. She also did not eat hers (for someone who loves gbegiri and ewedu). We just ate our goatmeat and left the rest. The lady cleaning up asked if we needed a to go when she noticed the food was barely touched. I was too disappointed.
My husband said his efo riro was good and asked if I'll like to have some of his but I had already lost my appetite.
Not going back there. But you can try your luck......
It’s a good place to eat your African cuisine, many good African delicacies. I went for the local rice, and I enjoyed it. The price is however on the high side. There was plenty of parking space.
If you want to taste Great Nigerian food, this is a good start and right in the middle of Houston. They have a good variety of plates to choose from so the opportunity to try is great. The parking is free and the prices are very reasonable.
I think this place was over exaggerated on social media by the owner. The way she described it online made me think I won’t be disappointed when I come here. If I was disappointed quite truly. This was not a variety of meals to choose from as the owner advertised, I had only two options to choose from when I arrived. Almost forgot to mention once getting the soup and sitting down, I had to get back up and ask the associate to warm the soup up for me. In conclusion, most likely I will not be back.
First things first the customer service is the worst I’ve ever seen. As I first time customer I was treated as if I should know how to order the meal I wanted. The guy kept getting frustrated when I didn’t know how many pieces of meat to get. I’ve never been to a Nigerian restaurant that charges per piece of meat. As soon as you walk in it smells horrible. I was getting food for my dad and I told him no matter how good the food is I would never go there for him again. I’d rather cook the food myself than return to this restaurant.
Nigerian restaurants in Houston need to be regulated ATP. There's no reason to still be overcharging while underdelivering. if the owner wants to be a traveling caterer, that's fine. don't forget to completely shut down your restaurant though while you are on the road. Because the staff at Amala zone don't give a crap and serve crap unless the owner is there and guess what guys? She is barely there. So even though you think that you are eating Amala zone delicacies, you are actually eating whatever the bleep any available staff cooked for the day and that inconsistency usually results in waste of money. Inedible food!
1st timer. Location was dark and dingy. Server seemed annoyed or unhappy. Gave the person's before us an overflowing plate of food and gave us 10% of that portion with bones for protein. Cashier seemed uninterested as well. Got home hours away to find the fufus for the soups were not put in the bag. Too far to go back for it. We didn't say anything to them beyond making our orders, but we won't be back. There was no good experience worth returning to.
Last time I was here, the service was not so good but it was manageable. This time, oh my days! Firstly, I am wondering who advised the owner to make the place look like a fast food restaurant (someone said its because of Covid).
Secondly, with all the money made in this place, you would think that the owner would provide a staff room where her employees can eat without probing eyes of hungry customers. How do you expect your customers to feel when they see your employee eating at the food counter? (I wanted to take a picture but it would be unfair to the hardworking lady who just needed to have her lunch).
Thirdly, so back to the "fast food queue tingy". So we stood at the queue for more than 15mins to 20mins (remember one of the employees was eating) so it was just one person serving the entire long queue of about 10 pple waiting for food. If you want to fashion your restaurant in a fast food manner, I would expect you learn from other successful fast food restaurants how it's done.
Fourthly, the inside of the restaurant seems to have deteriorated from the last time I was there. The restaurant now has the weird smell and I guess it's from the display of food.
So in summary, this place is a combination of horrible service with a nice food.
I will not recommend because if the restaurant looks that dirty, then the kitchen will definitely be an eyesore.
