Best WLM Reviews
Have done several one star restaurants both in Chicago and other cities, and now having an experience at Alinea I think I can finally articulate what the difference between a one star and a three star.
The food itself was well presented, paced, and was an excellent experience across all senses. We did a wine pairing and also enjoyed the selection along with the personal service from the house sommelier.
Atmosphere was excellent as well, while there are a good number of seats everything is segmented into small clusters of tables. Room is dimly lit and general noise level is nice.
Where things really stand out is the service, silverware promptly changed, plates collected; staff were both friendly and incredibly attentive. This is really where you get the difference between a one and a three star - food may be the same level of presentation and quality, but the staff really shine.
I think my only complaint would be timing & seating. Personally I enjoy when a group of tables is timed to be seated together. This not only makes the experience feel a bit more shared, and preserves the surprise for each dish. It doesn't detract much from the overall experience and I think if they went this route it might make maintaining the level of service they have challenging.
Absolutely would return again in the future.
My wife and I went here for our anniversary. I would recommend Alinea to anyone. If you are thinking if it is worth the money, it is. Not only is it a lot of food, but everything we tried was amazing and has so much thought and creativity put onto it. The food alone was worth it but the atmosphere and hospitality was a 10/10. Also, it’s not just dinner, it’s a show. I don’t want to ruin the surprise on any of that.
This is the single greatest dining experience of my life. Taking 2 clients with me, we went on a culinary journey I've never even dreamt of. The imagination matched the overwhelming unique twist on everything you've eaten before, just not this way. Over after another, changing centerpieces, getting up to visit the kitchen, to the final desserts which were, literally eaten off the table. Literally. The service was brilliant. Did I pay a fortune, yes, for someone like me, it was. And I can't wait to do it again!
We had an amazing experience at Alinea. The creativity of the dishes that were part of our nine course dinner was over the top. Every serving displayed a fusion of flavors that invited you to appreciate as they appeared and then melted into another one. The presentation was forward but elegant, the service has no parallel, the pairing wines were exceptional, and the staff was knowledgeable to a fault. We had a wonderful experience that hope to recreate in the future. Amazing!!
Dined in September to celebrate a birthday and engagement and everything was phenomenal. I won’t go into all of the dishes because that would stretch way too long.
The three stars speak for themselves, but the experience could be almost over the top if you haven’t done multiple tasting menus before. Alinea is more art than food (in a great way) but that might not be for everyone
This might be the hardest review I’ve ever written so far as it’s truly hard to think of the right words to describe this one-of-a-kind experience. Honestly, all I have to say is that if you consider yourself to be a foodie, then you better come here at some point in your life. The only thing I could point out that could have been better was our dessert showing, which felt a bit rushed and dispassionate. Either way, I cannot wait to explore more three(two and one!) star restaurants and see how they compare to this Chicago gem. Thanks for sharing the art!
Alinea has a reputation for being one of the finest restaurants in Chicago. Every bite of the 12-course (13?) tasting menu sends your taste buds into a dance. It is an expertly curated journey of flavors that showcased the incredible skill and creativity of the kitchen. The drink pairings complemented the dishes beautifully, adding a second layer of depth to an already exceptional meal.
The meal was full of unique moments, but two stood out as particularly memorable. One course was served in the kitchen, offering a unique and exciting glimpse behind the scenes. Being in the kitchen and witnessing the energy, added a special dynamic to the experience. Another highlight was the "balloon" course during dessert. The whimsical presentation and interactive nature of the dish make it fun and a stand out.
However the pacing of the service stood out for good and not so good reasons. The two-hour time limit, while understandable in a busy establishment, made the experience feel somewhat rushed at moments. For example, I had four paired drinks to get through in the early courses, which felt overwhelming at the start, and created a subtle pressure to keep up with the meals pace. Despite this, the service itself was impeccable. The staff went above and beyond, attending to every detail with a level of precision and warmth that you will not find in other restaurants.
A particularly memorable touch was when they handed me back my jacket as I was leaving, and it was warmed. It is a small but thoughtful gesture that highlights the care and effort they put into making the guest feel special. These kinds of details are what make Alinea not just a meal but an unforgettable experience.
If you're looking for a culinary journey filled with creativity, unique touches, and exceptional service, Alinea is worth every moment. Just be prepared for a brisk pace.
I don’t want to say too much about our dinner because I think that the less you know going in the more spectacular the experience. We celebrated my husband’s 40th birthday at the 5pm seating in the gallery. Alinea is a restaurant he has always wanted to go to and boy did it ever deliver. Ambiance, service, presentation and food were all legitimately astounding. We were physically walking out of the building around 8:15, so the whole meal was approximately 3 hours. This was truly such a special experience! P.S. spoilers in my photos so view at your own risk.
