Best WLM Reviews
Ala Shanghai offers a mixed experience that leans heavily on its culinary strengths but falters in ambiance and consistency.
Let's start with the positives: the food at Ala Shanghai is expertly prepared and showcases authentic flavors. Each dish we ordered, from the dim sum to the main courses, was carefully crafted and delicious. The staff were attentive and knowledgeable, providing recommendations and ensuring our dining experience was comfortable.
However, the ambiance left much to be desired. The restaurant was bustling and incredibly loud, making it nearly impossible to hold a conversation at our table. This detracted significantly from what could have been a more relaxed evening.
One dish that particularly disappointed was the drunken chicken. It arrived bland, and frankly unappetizing in appearance. Given the otherwise high standard of the meal, this was a noticeable letdown.
In summary, Ala Shanghai impresses with its culinary prowess and attentive service, but falls short in creating a conducive dining atmosphere and maintaining consistency across all dishes. If you're willing to overlook these shortcomings, the restaurant offers a worthwhile culinary journey into authentic Chinese cuisine.
One of the more authentic Chinese restaurants in the area, it's interior is much nicer than a regular rice shop but service is similar to a Chinese dive - indifferent. So go for the food, not for service.
Overall great experience for late lunch on a weekday. Prompt service with teapot and water growler right away. Clean and nice atmosphere. Ordered fish w onion & straw mushroom dish plus eggplant and ground pork dish. Both were excellent. Pan fried pork dumplings, hot & sour soup were very good. Impressed by the amount of customers eating lunch then also ordering more food to go - a good sign.
The service was beyond good. We were tag teamed by 3 pleasant, efficient young men who seemed to anticipate our wishes.
The food was delicious. Shrimp Dumplings were exquisite. Hot and Sour soup was savory and everything you want in a soup. The menu is extensive with Dim Sum served all day!
We can’t wait to return. It is an hour and 45 minutes from home, but worth the trip.
We had a blast at brunch with my amazing friend the other day. The food was out of this world ????, and the service was top-notch! ???? We laughed, had great conversations, and to top it all off, they serve the best Peking duck in town! ???????? So thrilled and oh-so-yummy! ❤️
The food is always so good! The soup dumplings are great, the fried rice is always tasty. The Tong po pork is soooo good. The atmosphere is very pleasant. Their service has been truly incredible lately so Ive changed my review to 5 stars.
Celebrated my father’s birthday here and we had an amazing time. The staff was extremely helpful and patient. Everything was perfectly cooked. Every member of my family enjoyed the meal and the portions were very generous and affordable. We ordered soup dumplings, scallion pancakes, shrimp with asparagus, tong po pork, beef chow fun, beef with scallions, shrimp fried rice and the pepper steak.
My wife and I have eaten at Ala Shanghai on many occasions over the years. I believe that it is under new management, because last night's experience was completely subpar. The first thing that struck us was how pared down the menu was. It seemed about a third of what it was a year ago .We started with dumplings and spring rolls. The vegetable dumplings were absolutely disgusting. They contained little more than spinach and were gummy and understeamed. We moved on to vegetable spring rolls which were so overcooked that the vegetable filling was nothing but textureless mush. My general Tso's chicken lacked any sort of heat or piquancy, and the normally crispy coating was a soft and rubbery disappointment.
The service was less than enthusiastic as well. In the past we were always greeted with a wonderfully caring waitstaff, but that seems to have gone by the wayside.
Everyone at the restaurant was just so nice to me, and the food was outstanding. I came in by myself, and they were busy. I had come the week before and they were unable to seat me, and had a line developing, so I understand how that goes, and I headed back to my hotel. This week, there was one table left, a four top, and they sat me at it, on my own. Not only that, but the very nice lady who welcomed me was happy to seat me, or at least didn't let on that it is usually not a great thing to give a four top to a single diner. I expressed my gratitude as I have really been wanting to try this restaurant for some time.
While you can get some of the Americanized Chinese food found around the county at Ala Shanghai - things like General Tso's Chicken, and that kind of thing - what they really specialize in is actual Chinese food, and I was not disappointed.
I had Pork Soup Dumplings, Tong-Po Pork, and Chicken with Chestnuts. Now look, that's a lot of food for a single person, but I took up a four top for one person, and I knew I'd eat some of the left overs back at my hotel, or for lunch tomorrow, overall I am glad with my choices.
Everything was fresh, delicious, and served with graciousness. Really I had three separate people. I think one of the people is the owner, and then two servers, but anticipated my every need even before I knew what I wanted. They often encouraged me to take my time and enjoy myself, which is kind as I am sure they would love to have four people at the table. I know I keep referencing that, but seriously, in the restaurant industry it's a big deal.
I want to go back as soon as I can, and would like to try everything on the menu. I don't really know anyone in this area, but maybe I can find someone to go with me next time, as it is very much a place that is best enjoyed with friends. I couldn't. help but notice the other groups around the restaurant that we all having a lovely time.
Again, Ala Shanghai is simply amazing! 100% recommend!
