Al's Breakfast is a Dinkytown staple that has been going strong for 70+ years now. The place is tiny - only 14 seats - which creates an interesting setup where folks waiting in line stand behind the folks eating. In order to fit people in, it's not uncommon to pick up your plates and move around when there are gaps in seating.
They stay busy, but week days are going to be easier to get in than weekends. Also, do note that they are cash and check only so make sure to hit an ATM before you get there!
The ideal breakfast spot: intimate, down-to-earth, and charming staff.
There may be a line to sit, but it is well worth the wait. The bacon is sizzling and crispy, the pancakes are pillowy and decadent, and the banter bus is in full swing when engaging with the staff!
Love this place!!
This is a super fun spot for breakfast in Dinkytown! The restaurant itself is super small, but that only adds to the charm. The food is good and reasonably priced, and it feels like getting a little bit of history along with your meal!
This little place has made many lists and won many awards, including a James Beard Award. So does it live up to the hype? You betcha.
I ended up coming here twice during my last visit to Minneapolis, it was just that good. I normally don’t do breakfast but I had to try it and try it again.
I was lucky, both times I came here there were seats available about 9:30 and 11:30 on a weekday but filled up quickly afterwards.
The staff is wonderful and very welcoming, accommodating, and friendly. But hey this is Minnesota so what would you expect?
The first time I was suggested to try the José (Poached eggs on Hashed Browns with Salsa and Cheddar Cheese) and that along with a side of sausage and some solid coffee made for a good breakfast. Add to that some good conversation and getting some local recommendations, especially for a good burger and everything was A-OK.
I decided to stop by once more before I left town and got the Jose again (which is great with the large selection of hot sauces that they have) and this time added a short stack of buttermilk flapjacks with blackberries and chocolate chip, OMG soo good!
A must visit and worth the wait.
Al's Breakfast in Dinky Town offers a delightful dining experience with its fresh and tasty winter special and sausage scrambles, complemented by delicious whole wheat toast and endlessly refillable coffee. The buttermilk pancakes are fluffy, though slightly salty. The cozy, quintessentially American atmosphere adds to the charm, making it a recommended spot. Plus, the prices are quite affordable, adding to its appeal.
Awesome, no frills diner! It’s a small space and a long line on the weekend mornings but it moves quick and food comes out quick. Great diner food, still very affordable. Note that it is cash only!
A Minnesota legend. I haven’t been here for 30 years but the memories came flooding back. If you’re claustrophobic this may not be your spot ???? be ready to get close to people. The breakfast is fantastic. Love the pancakes, CBH and good coffee. Don’t miss but be prepared to wait!
Do yourself a favor & cancel any other breakfast plans you have! Grab some cash because no credit cards & get there early if you can because limited seating. This gem has been slinging made-to-order diner-style breakfasts since 1950! It’s a local fave-many regulars that have been coming here for decades. The from-scratch made food is delicious! Chatting with someone in line who’s been coming here since he was a young UofM student & now comes with his family! Our server Isabell/Isabella was so friendly & answered our questions about some of the nostalgic décor. Don’t be frustrated if you see a line out the door-the staff does a great job getting people thru. ATM nearby if you forget cash. Shirts & mugs avail!
