If you want the charm of old school Italian-American that is no frills and feels like a cozy hole-in-the-wall, Al Dente is where it's at.
The atmosphere is so intimate with its low lighting and they treat guests like family. The pasta definitely tastes house made. The highlight is definitely the quality of their Marinara sauce that is mellow, buttery and not astringent whatsoever.
Is it the best of the North End? Taste wise, it's very traditional and classic. No pizzaz, just good 'ol fashioned warm hug from your nonna kind of Italian. Which, is not a bad thing! But if you want something new, fresh, and enticing, this isn't for you. This is more of comfort food in the most sincere of ways. Very homemade and bright. Delicious!
This is everything I could have hoped for visiting little Italy in Boston. The gentleman who greeted and check on us, I’m assuming the owner, was very nice and made us feel special. The wait staff were very attentive and we never lacked for anything. Our food was fantastic and this felt like having a meal at my Italian grandpa-in-laws kitchen. 5 stars for everything!
Traveled up to the north end and wanted to find a low key place to eat. The hostess and server were very friendly and attentive.
Everything ordered came out promptly and fresh. All dishes were very tasty and the gnocchi was superb. Will be returning and would recommend.
Absolutely a hidden gem. I have eaten alot of Italian food in my life. This was the best sauce and food I have ever eaten. We had mussels and chicken parmigiana. It was outrageous. Not to mention the service was great. The best was they have air conditioning. You must eat here!!! Make a reservation.
Excellent food. Such a large menu it's hard to decide. The lobster raviolis were lighter than expected and filled with lobster in a tasty sauce. Chicken and eggplant parm with fresh tri color tortellini was delicious! The eggplant was so thin and perfectly cooked.
I got the chicken Milanese and, just like the other review said, was soaked in a very overpowering lemon sauce. What should have been crispy chicken on top turned out very soggy. The only flavor in the dish was lemon. I initially thought the other reviewer was being overly negative, but I totally agree. I don't send food back because it's a waste, but if I did, I would be have, and I'm not picky at all.
It was also surprising that an Italian restaurant, where the bill was $100 for 2 people, didn't have any oil to dip your bread into and the bread was room temperature.
My daughter and I enjoyed our meal. Joann was an amazing waitress. We tried the pumpkin raviolis, we felt that was more like a desert than an appetizer, it was delicious! I had the cheese lasagna and meatball, my daughter had the fettuccine Alfredo and both were delicious.
I understand that Saturday nights are busy, and a long wait is expected (2.5h to be more particular), so we decided to get takeout. When we were placing the order they asked what type of pasta we wanted. But after choosing any of them we were informed they didn’t have the one we requested. Okay, fine. Upon picking up they told us they didn’t have cutlery for the takeout order. How nice of you to force us trying to find forks somewhere else. And lastly – I didn’t like the food. The whole experience is kinda frustrating.
