I was disappointed with my latest dining experience at Ajax. I know it’s recently changed ownership but was hoping that everything stayed mostly the same. Granted it’s been a couple years since I’ve been anyway but the changes are pretty big. My favorite appetizer is gone (the sausage and cheese plate) along with my husband’s favorite, the gravy cheese fries. One of my favorite entrees was the burger (The Deuce) and it’s not even close to being the same. It used to be huge and super juicy. What I was given yesterday was small, burnt, and so dry to the point of being almost inedible. It no longer seemed like a hand shaped patty but a frozen, pre-made cafeteria style. I was so heartbroken that the Ajax I know and loved has changed so much and sold out from the things that made it so unique. I really hope they will work on this. The big easy sandwich was still ole faithful and good as it once was, and the new fries are an improvement but we were still pretty disappointed.
My husband and I came in tonight because we had a craving for some good old fashioned Ajax. Then we remembered it changed hands....but it was still the good old Ajax that we remember!! Granted we only went a couple times when it was the old owners, but it definitely tasted the same tonight!
On the way into town, I was told Ajax has a new owner and things may not be the same! The meat loaf taste the same, green beans the same and the sweetness in the corn bread, the same.
I did taste a taste of peanut butter in the gravy! Has it always been that way with the gravy?
When we asked where to eat while we were touring Ole Miss more than one person suggested Ajax. It is a nice diner that likely has the taste and feel of any deep south diner - it is pretty cool.
We ordered the Ajax Burger, the Club (not typical...it was more like a hogie...and a Veggie plate with fried okra, sweet potato casserole and mac and cheese <-- nice veggie plate huh?!
The decor is fun, the location is ideal and the staff was wonderful.
Always a wonderful place to dine while visiting my son in Oxford. The home style cooking is top notch. I started off with Red Beans & Rice Egg-rolls as our appetizer. We loved it. 2 good sized egg rolls were served. We devoured them in seconds.
For my meal, I had the Country Fried Steak with Mashed Potatoes and Turnip Greens. All were excellent. The Country Fried Steak was good, but certainly not the best I’ve ever had. My son had the meatloaf which was outstanding.
Overall, there’s nothing finer than Ajax Diner, when it comes to home style meals for a reasonable price in Oxford. The service is always friendly and quick. And the crowd often adds to the fun vibe.
A couple of coworkers and I were in town for work for a few days, and Ajax was our first meal during our time in Oxford. We went for lunch on day 1, and everything was great. The lady that sat us was informative when we asked questions, the waitress was polite and attentive, and the food was all around good.
Excellent food and service. Catfish and greens excellent. Beer on tap cold and delicious. Meals came out quickly. Fun atmosphere but not too loud. Highly recommend.
Food is OUTSTANDING! My favorite place to eat when I'm in Oxford. Must order the banana pudding & fried dill pickles. Husband always gets the Big Easy. We absolutely LOVE Ajax Diner!
