Food at "the oven" is absolutely fantastic! We had pizza, brisket tacos and sandwich, jalapeño poppers and chicken wings. Everything was so good. Everyone was super friendly. Live music on Saturday when we were there. Convenient location to tour many of the waterfalls. Our room was small but clean but the bathroom outlet didn't work. No a/c which was fine for our stay because it cooled down nicely at night and we just used the fan. We would stay there again. Thank you Mary Beth and Anthony for a great time!
I drove up to AJ's from Grand Rapids just to have my photo taken in front of their roadside sign. So I thought I would spent the night. The room they assigned me was not cleaned yet, so I waited, not very long. They then said that the room was ready. I went and paid for it. $130 plus tax. Got my stuff into the room and it was very warm out. No AC in the room. Just a fan. I went to open a window, and saw hundreds of dead flies in the window sill and on the floor under the window. Went to open the other window and the same thing. Dead flies. The bathroom sink was never cleaned and someone left a container of worms in the fridge. That room was not a $130 room. Very disappointed.
My review is about the restaurant only. I’m a local but I won’t be back. Service was spotty, our waitress was very distracted. Since this place has pretty wide open hours, I expected it to be family friendly, but there were no high chairs for little ones, which made getting our food and eating as well as serving our child difficult. Maybe needless to say, but there is no kid’s menu. Food was cold. When ordering I’d stick to pizza and bar fare as it will come out hotter.
Mary Beth will make sure you regret giving her money. I know that up north a person's options are limited, we had very low expectations as we have been to the U.P. many times. The quaintness is part of the allure for us. No A/C, Dirty, Dirty carpet in the room, Plugged Drains, no garbage (except the tiny one in the bathroom) everything is on a giant hill, logging trucks flying by less than 100' from where you sleep. All of that we could have cared less, but to deal with an ungrateful, rude, lying, obviously not self-aware host.. Thats not acceptable. We paid for 4 nights and left after 2, To meet Mary Beth is to regret Staying at AJ's. Sad really.
Our absolute favorite place to go when we head to Lake Gogebic! Mary Beth and crew are so welcoming, attentive and fun! Rooms are clean and cozy! Always an amazing time!
We have stayed there before, but it’s been some years. The addition of the restaurant brings it to the next level. We really enjoyed eating there. Victoria was a fantastic server, bartender. The chef’s came over and spoke to us. It felt like family. We’ll definitely stay again. The room was nice, clean, and comfortable.
Received text that we would be self checking in. Room would be open with key left inside. NO key inside. Contacted owner and was told the person before us must have taken the key! NO chain latch on the inside so we were very uncomfortable. At 7:10 am, a man entered our room! Contacted owner and while she apologized, they did nothing to make the situation better. No response by owner after I texted and emailed requesting 50% off room price. We paid 2x the price for a room on the lake and couldn't even enjoy it as we weren't comfortable leaving our stuff in the room not knowing where this missing key was. After a stranger walked in on us, we up and left. No dinner at the lake, no coffee on the lake next morning. Also, no air conditioning so windows had to be open, allowing highway noise to be heard. Room was very dark. NO coffee cups to use with the coffee pot. So disappointing!
I originally scheduled our visit for four nights. A change of plans had my daughter and me leaving a day earlier than originally planned and I told Mary Beth, the owner, this. I asked if my last night could be refunded since I was not going to be staying. She didn't think she would be able to this since they're not a large chain and can't do business this way. I'm not a fan of this principle, but that's their policy. The lodge had a spectacular setting, the food was very good and the staff was nice. I would return if they were more accommodating with the refund. I paid a fair price for three nights and it didn't appear they were sold out, surprisingly, for the weekend of July 4th. I think, from a professional standpoint, this money should be refunded.||It was a gorgeous view, but the room could use a little more TLC as well. We had standing water in our tub right away when showering. I told Mary Beth this and she said someone would look into it after we left. I know it's the Northern Woods, but standing in your own soap scum is kind of gross.
