This is amazing Prime Rib at a very well cooked medium rare. It was so tender, and it just melted in your mouth. Only served on Fridays and Saturdays after 4 p.m., but if you're around, catch you a slice. It CAN come with bacon wrapped shrimp, which has a delicate flavor. There are two options (one with shrimp and one without). It also comes with beans and mash potatoes, which the potatoes are wrapped in a pepper. Such a great special and thank you Abuelos!
I was craving Tex mex and decided to stop in. The restaurant wasn’t super busy, so my food came out very quickly! I sat at the bar, bartender was ok. The queso diablo was delicious. I had the Durango Burrito and it was good, the skinny margaritas tasted like a fake sweetener. Overall it was an ok experience.
Nice place. Clean, polite and quick staff. Food was good but not great. Some more flavor is definitely needed. Portion to cost ratio is a little off as well. 18$ for a burrito and rice was just not right for the amount of food you receive, burrito should have been a bit bigger. Tex Mex yes, overall experience positive. I can't see myself coming back regularly but on an occasion, I don't see why not.
It was an average, sub par experience. 6 of us waited for 30 minutes after being told it was only 10-15 minutes of a wait. The food just wasn’t good quality for my taste. The server was very sweet and she did her best to sever our table, we have no complaints there. But as far as quality of food goes, I felt bad that my husband had to pay our bill.
I went to Abuelo's for lunch to celebrate my birthday with my kids. It was not busy. Our table of six was seated immediately. Lots of empty tables. However, we waited 15 minutes just to get our drinks after we ordered them-and it was just water. Then we waited just under an hour for our food after we ordered. We'd been there an hour and a half by this time and I had to leave for an appointment. I got a take home box, put my piping hot food in it, and rushed out the door. My kids stayed and ate. Everyone liked their food but my birthday lunch with my kids was ruined. An hour and a half for lunch when the restaurant isn't busy at all should be plenty of time to order and eat.
The food n the drinks were as advertised n tasted good. The ambience was good too although the place was close to empty mostly cos it was mid week and we were there at 5.30 pm. By the time we left, ter was quite a crowd (7.30pm).
I would say that being a franchise they maintained consistency in what they served.
Abuelos on 71st did not disappoint. Bacon wrapped shrimp on a jalapeño bed with cheese was a dream with the 5oz medallion and sides.
Good service as well.
Consistent in Food Quality, Service, and Atmosphere
There are only a couple of large corporate chain Mexican restaurants that I like. Abuelo’s Mexican Restaurant is one of them. And even though I don’t dine here very often I would consider it the best.
They start the meal with their chips and a nice variety four of salsas that range from sweet tomatillo (with a hint of pineapple I think), to a nice, not too hot habanero. In between, on the heat range are a mild, but flavorful tomato salsa and a chipotle salsa. All good!
We had the Enchilada Lunch and the Chile Relleño and Enchilada lunch. With both of the meals we had, we picked the refried beans and Papas con Chile. The Papas con Chile is an Abuelo’s original item. This is the first time I have had it. It is kind of a mashed potato, spicy, cheesy casserole. It is rich and creamy. The red sauce my wife picked for her chicken enchilada was very good. The Chile Relleño I had was filed with seasoned shredded beef covered in queso and the tasty nicely spiced, chicken enchilada was covered in a green chili queso sauce.
Good meals! Good Service, Nice restaurant!
If you are looking for other Mexican restaurants in the area, check out my reviews in my collection "Jalapeno Highway" on Yelp. I've probably been there.
