Best WLM Reviews

Not too many places in the valley that serve dim sum especially in the carts that the servers push around the restaurant so this is our go to. Service is to be expected as not the best but like I said not many choices. They do have lots of options which is always a positive. Staff is not rude but not friendly either. You definitely need to get their attention vs them coming to check on you. They only serve bottled water no ice water for free!
It's a larger restaurant so you can host a large party here.
We were part of the group of people who went out for dinner on Christmas day. We spoke with the waitress who has been there for over 20 years. They don't mind being open because it's another business day. We got there early because we had a feeling it was going to be busy. They were packed when we left and that was at 6pm. Our food came out in waves. The kitchen was very overwhelmed. The waitress said they had too many to go orders to keep up. Overall, the food was hot and plentiful. We ordered too many dishes. Nothing like Chinese leftovers. I know some of the customers after us were waiting a long time for their food. I just hope they understood how difficult it is to staff on a holiday. Patience or stay home. Orange chicken was tender but had a barbecue flavor we weren't expecting. Beef chowfun. Deep fried Oysters. Crispy fried salted pork chop. Small order pork BBQ and Westlake beef soup. All good and filling.
I would NOT call this place authentic. And the experience is subpar. I don't like leaving bad reviews because I understand that many Mum & Pops may be constrained by the economy.
Then again, I was spending money, and I had expectations of an authentic Chinese restaurant. To that end, this place was a huge disappointment.
As of May 2024, one crab plate here costs about $70. When a dish costs this much, I expect above-average experience in (1) food, (2) atmosphere, and/or (3) experience.
I did not order crab on this occasion because this was my first visit. Instead, I ordered BBQ pork and roasted duck at $40. Look at my picture. This is what $40 gets you here, minus tip.
Food was below average. While Char Siu BBQ pork was authentic in that it was not colored with artificial red coloring, it was basking in runny sugar sauce . . . A big No Go. Anyone who had authentic BBQ pork would know that this is not authentic Char Siu in the conventional sense. This was more like To-Go Chinese food tailored to average American consumers. The duck was so so and I could not smell the distinctive duck aroma. All in all, the food might impress folks who aren't used to authentic Chinese food. Based on these cheaper dishes, I am not going back to eat the $70 dish when the special occasion arrives.
Speaking of the $70 dish, I cannot help but compare this place to other places that have similar prices (i.e. Newport Seafood in San Gabriel). Unlike other authentic Chinese restaurants, this place had dirty carpets not been cleaned for ages, and the furniture looked at least 20 years old. The window had dust piled on the surface. They clearly don't wash windows. I can pay $12 for a to-go box at this place. But $70 for a dish.... here? Absolutely not.
Another thing that shocked me: they charge for water. There is no option to get a cup of water because they only offer Kirkland water bottles for $1.50. Good luck if you're thirsty and need a refill. Now, this might be ok to unknowing patrons, but I have never been to an authentic Chinese restaurant that charges for water. On the other hand, I have been to Panda Express and like the kinds that charge for water bottles. My point is that this place operates more like a To-Go Chinese than an authentic Chinese restaurant.
I won't be coming back here. If a cheap dish sucks, an expensive dish will most likely suck too. And I don't want to dine at a place that refuses to provide basic services (i.e. cup of water), especially when I am shelling out $100+ for a meal.
One more thing: I DID NOT SEE LIVE CRABS OR LOBSTERS ON DISPLAY. This place most likely sells frozen shells. There is only one type of customers who would pay top dollars for frozen crabs/lobsters: Suckers.
Again, not worth the money. Just go somewhere else if you're looking for an authentic Chinese food experience.
Dated inside. I've been coming here since early 2000s. Quality on some food is not the same like the house special lobster which was a hit back in the day and main reason to come. Now still has dimsum 11a til 3p, still a good place for that. Pork chops with spicy salt and pepper still the same and very good place for this dish. Not greasy like others. Taste is consistent, fried crispy. Eat right away if you can. Friendly staff, accommodating too. Prompt service. This is a good option for Chinese food in the Granada Hills SFV area. I come from Ventura county for the pork chops, chicken feet dimsum item, char siu bao, sesame balls with sweet yellow bean paste filling, if that says something. They used to have big tanks full of fresh live seafood (crabs, lobster, fish) that you could pick out and they take it out clean and cook for you. That has long been gone. They used to have a well lit stage for when you had a big group. Not as many dimsum carts and ladies like they used to anymore. Not as bustling like back way before covid. But it's good place to get your chinese food craving and for certain dishes i prefer. One thing is consistent though: their prices have steadily gone up to ridiculous level. Demand for higher price and make sure you stay presentable in looks and ambiance as well. I invite my close family out of tradition but not the best option to entertain new friends just cause it looks dated inside, not all dishes are top quality anymore either.
Service was lacking by one staff member, but then I had great service from another gentleman that's been working there almost as long as I've been eating there (26 years!)
Regardless...the FOOD is always delicious and the portion sizes are great. You won't be disappointed in the variety. Feel free to ask for things not on the menu as well that they still make like chicken in garlic sauce. ????
The service was not bad, but my friends was extremely unhappy with the quality of the food.We went in expecting to have a hot meal(especially for the price), but the food came out way too fast & wasn't at all hot.
I have been going to the A &W on Mission in GRANADA HILLS for 20+ years! ❤️ They have excellent dim sum and a large variety. So good!! So authentic!! So demure????!
I can close my eyes and be in San Francisco Chinatown. The owner is wonderful, service is excellent. They have TWO locations. Granada Hills is the better of the two IMHO. Enjoy!
UPDATE: We had Dim Sum on a Monday afternoon. Normally the service and the food is excellent. It wasn't today. The shrimp and beef with rice noodle looked terrible. It must have been the last of them because they looked all torn up. I've never seen Dim Sum look so inedible. They should have never served that to us. They also tasted bland. When I tried to get a bill it took like 15 minutes to finally getting one. I even went up to the cashier to speed up the process but No one knew where the ticket was. Once I got the ticket I went up to pay bill. Instead of running my card right then they said they will bring it back to me, another 10 mins went by. They really didn't seem too busy either, about 5 other tables. We've been coming here for many years I'm hoping this was an aberration.
We went on Mothers Day. Dine in was available and tables were socially spaced. The food was delicious, Kung Pao Chicken, house special squid and pork chops 5⭐. The Chow fun and walnut shrimp 4⭐. They served Costco bottled water instead of ice water in glasses, they charged $1.20 per bottle. The food came out a bit slow, they apologized and gave three complementary baked barbeque pork bows. We will definitely come back again.
