My husband and I had dinner here on our date night. Our first time and wow, what a nice experience. The food was good, the service was quick, and I love the red/green card. You flip it to red if you don't need service or flip to green if you'd like to get the waitstaff's attention.
We thoroughly enjoyed the food and plan to come back and even visit other 5-8 Taverns as well.
We ordered the cheese curds. They were super tasty. No one does cheese curds like Wisconsin and its neighbors.
The Juicy Lucy, Nothing special but it had good taste. I do feel it was a bit undercooked.
The onion rings were crispy and great onion to batter ratio. They were just right!
I ordered takeout. Cannot talk about the location or its service.
We liked the sweet potato fries and marshmallow sauce. It would have been good to have the server know the specials and soups without needing to walk away twice to look at the board or check what teas are available. She also didn’t know what herbal tea was which is concerning.
Let's start with the good shall we? Those cheese curds are banging. ???? They have a really light, delicious breading and some serious cheese-pull. Being a WI girl, I love a good chunk of cheese and these are definitely it.
The actual meals themselves though? Decidedly meh. ???? The BLT was fine, but the chips aren't housemade or anything special, and while it wasn't bad, it's certainly nothing to write home about. The sunfish basket caught my ????, because, how often do you see THAT on a menu? But the breading is WAY too much for these poor little fishies, so much so that you could barely tell there was fish inside. The jojos ???? also could have benefited from a double-fry or some kind of extra cook time - they're just too grainy for my liking and I won't even mention the burned toast. ????
We want to like this place, because it's close to home and I like the original location a lot, but we just don't. ☹️
Love their juicy lucy and their cheese curds are amazing! Our server was personable, came at all the right times and we had a great meal!
The service in bar area was great, the atmosphere was cozy and dressed for Christmas the food was not very good, the chicken wild rice soup tasted like a smoke flavor was added, chili also had same flavor....won't be going back
I recently moved to the St. Paul area and have had the pleasure of eating at the 5-8 Grill a few times now. The food I’ve been served has been incredible and I’m so excited to try the other seasonal and year-round options. The service is great and it’s a great place to go with friends or family.
The 5-8 is more than just a Bar/Restaurant, it's a part of Minnesota Twin Cities history. While the one here on Robert Street in West Saint Paul is newer than the original 5-8 Club on Cedar Ave, just south of Minneapolis, they share the same spirit. The original 5-8 Club was a Speakeasy during Prohibition, and it was a chef there who came up with Minnesota's most recognized "Signature Burger," the Juicy Lucy (if you are unaware, a Juicy Lucy has the cheese INSIDE the burger patty instead of simply draped across the top of it - and now you know).
I particularly like the sweet potato fries and the Haystack Onions - my wife likes the Santa Fe Juicy Lucy.
We go to the 5-8 at least a couple of times per month on our own, and whenever we have company that we want to take out somewhere (especially if they are the sort whose palate doesn't allow for Mexican food, Indian food, Thai food, sushi/Japanese food, etc. - the food is good but comfortably American).
