Traditional Chinese cuisine in Chinatown- lunch special was very good! We had the aubergine and the sesame chicken, served with rice and soup. Both were very tasty.
We also had the scallion pancake which went well with our dishes and the pork dumplings- unfortunately these were slightly undercooked.
Service is polite and food arrived quickly.

If you’re looking for an unforgettable meal in Chinatown, 456 Shanghai on Mott Street is the place to go! We visited with our family of five, and it was hands down one of the best dining experiences we’ve had. The steamed soup dumplings—both the shrimp and pork and the pork—were the best we’ve ever had, easily the top dumplings on Mott Street. The fried soup dumplings were also great, but the steamed ones really stole the show.
The General Tso’s chicken was phenomenal—crispy, flavorful, and not overly sweet, the best we’ve ever tasted. We also tried the orange chicken and the Shanghai rice cakes, both of which were delicious. If you’re in Chinatown, don’t miss out on the best dumplings in town. The food, service, and atmosphere at 456 Shanghai make it a must-visit!
Been too long since we visited NYC, happy to be back to 456, a family favorite. Menu had our favorites, reasonable pricing. Service was prompt, food brought out hot, fresh and tasty. We’ll definitely be back!
We were walking through Chinatown und came by this restaurant.
It was crowded and some women outside recommended it, so we went for it.
I traveled through a lot of asian countries and this food has nothing to do with it…
It was so much meat and so little vegetable, the taste was monotonous.
The size of the portion was big.
We wont come here again.
I’ve been there twice.
Iam super excited for this restaurant.
Everything is so so perfect and delicious.
We ordered rice and noodles with chicken, beef and pork.
Also we ordered chicken with broccoli and chicken with soya.
The dumplings were so so tasty!!
You have to try it if you been there.
This spot is great for a quick and cheap bite to eat. The soup dumplings were pretty good, and well portioned for sharing, alongside some of the other dumplings options we got like steamed pork dumplings and pork buns. I did think the spicy twice cooked pork wasn't all that great was expecting it moreso szchuan styled with leeks not mushrooms.
However, if you have allergies while it's a risk anywhere you go he exceptionally careful here. One of our parties has an allergy to sesame seeds (not oil) to which we explained to our waiter who said they would leave the seeds off the items. However, they served the items with sesame seeds and then reserved the same items but just tried to pick them off after mentioning it. So while that's an individual problem just bear it in mind.
The Chicken Lo Mein was absolutely perfect. The noodles were cooked just right, with tender pieces of chicken and a savory sauce that tied everything together. The veggies were fresh and added just the right amount of crunch to make every bite satisfying.
But the real star of the meal was the Pan-Fried Shrimp Dumplings. Crispy and golden on the outside, with a juicy shrimp filling that was packed with flavor, these dumplings were pure comfort food. Dipping them in the accompanying sauce made them even better—simple, flavorful, and downright addictive.
This isn’t a fancy, over-the-top place—it’s the kind of spot where you go for great food, generous portions, and a relaxed atmosphere. If you’re craving solid, delicious Chinese comfort food in NYC, this place is definitely worth checking out. I’ll be back for sure!
a great spot! I ordered the General Tso Tofu and vegetable dumpling. Portions for both were very big, which is great for leftovers! Both dishes I had were very tasty; the tofu was perfectly crisp on the outside and soft on the inside, although the sauce was a touch too sweet. The servers here are really funny and sweet!
